Whenever I ask someone around my age what kids shows they used to watch when they were little, CMTB's "The Trap Door" would be one of the prime answers. Now, to tell the truth, the last time I remembered seeing this toon was in 1996 when all I had was to rely on my grandad to record cartoon off The Children's Channel. In recent weeks I finally decided that it was high time I bought the UK DVD, which contained all 40 episodes. And now I know why it's such a favourite of so many British 20-somethings!
First off, it's a stop motion animation. I like stop motion animations. But what makes this one so different? Well, I can tell you something, I don't know of other claymations that were made in the 80's that actually looked like the animators put effort in it. Most of the time you'd see loads of little bugs that crawl around that must have been so hard to animate simultaniously, along with the animating the main characters. Not to mention how a voice cast of only one voice actor - Willie Rushton - could manage to bring them all to life. Berk, that big blue thing we all know and love, speaks in a rather cheerful Westcountry accent, Boni in a posh but moany voice, while Him Upstairs has a funny cockney accent, and Rogg sounded all thick. This is worth watching for all claymation fans, because of how well animated it is for a low staffed production.moreless
