  • Comedy superstar Steve Coogan has agreed to tour the North of England - his home ground - to review a succession of expensive restaurants and hotels for a magazine. But when his girlfriend won't come with him, Rob Brydon is a last-minute substitute.moreless

This was an extremely clever, unusual series, funny and sad and far sharper than it at first seems. Director Michael Winterbottom has re-teamed Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, stars of his eccentric movie "A Cock And Bull Story", and again cast them as fictionalised and rather unflattering versions of themselves. Like that film, "The Trip" seems to be inspired by Louis Malle's 1982 movie "My Dinner With Andre", where Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn played characters with the same names and jobs as themselves - here the comparison is clearer, because Steve and Rob spend much of their screentime actually having a succession of expensive meals, with each episode named after an eatery. And, as before, the comedy, whilst frequently (unexpectedly) hilarious, is tinged with real sadness, and we find ourselves reflecting on the unhappiness of these characters and the uncertainty of their seemingly affluent lives. The wintry settings, so very beautifully photographed, are appropriate.moreless
