  • After a solid English breakfast, Steve and Rob pay a brief visit to Steve's parents and then return to London.

The last episode of this quirky, clever, lyrical series has its moments of humour, but its tone, overall, is one of quiet contemplation, tinged with sadness. Steve, so competitive, so ambitious, so successful, has to reflect on what's most important to him; he eventually decides against pursuing the American career he's dreamed about so long, and there's just a chance that he might now take his responsibilities to his family more seriously. Cheerful, uncomplicated, annoying Rob returns home to his simple, happy life, but poor Steve is last seen quite alone in his luxury apartment, a great glass mausoleum which seems the epitome of both success and expensive emptiness. You'll be reminded of "The King Of Comedy" and "Lost In Translation" - caustic, cool-temperature comedies about the perils of success. Michael Winterbottom's beautiful mini-series can sustain these comparisons.moreless
