Episode Summary

EDIT
Sea Of The Wind, The Shore Of The Maze - Chapter One
The episode opens with a little boy out in the cold snow looking in the window. His mother and grandmother are arguing over how he is spoiled and misbehaves. He trips and all the sudden it is one year later.. He is in a different part of town.. The location is his grandmothers funeral. Flash forward to present day Japan.. The same boy, now older is named Kaname Takasato. He is in art class having strange flashbacks of the incident. We see Sugimoto, having already met Takasato, she goes up and talks to him. She keeps asking him why he was spirited away to The Twelve Kingdoms. Takasato doesn't want to talk about it. Back in Kei, we see Youko and Keiki flying to Mount Hou to see an old friend of Keiki's. When they arrive Keiki introduces Youko to Youka. Youka tells Youko about the special raboku tree here that gives life to kirin. Taiki, the missing kirin of Tai is brought up and Keiki tells about how his nyokai, Sanshi was born. As she was guarding the "egg" Taiki was in.. A shoku occurred and sent the unborn Taiki into Japan. This made Taiki's birth to take place in Japan.. As a normal person. Back to current day Japan, Kaname's younger brother, Suguru, is being hassled by seniors about how people who hang out his brother end up being killed or hurt. Sugimoto appears and asks him about his brother. He explains to her how he got spirited away and ever since he came back strange things seem to happen around him. Back in Youka's story, 10 years have passed since the shoku, but finally Lady Gyokuyou found that Taiki was in Japan. She opened a portal and allowed Sanshi to stick her hand in to grab Taiki. This was what happened when Taiki disappeared from his home in Japan for a year. After Taiki got pulled into The Twelve Kingdoms, he was confused. But Sanshi couldn't have been more happy.moreless

  • This opening episode does a fantastic job of presenting a unique way of introducing the new arc.

It's snowing, and a young boy is outside in his backyard, waiting for the argument between his mother and grandmother to end. Something from behind catches his attention, and he slips. As soon as he falls down, he's in the middle of the street, naked with really long hair. It turns out it's an entire year later during the date of the death of his grandmother. Back in The Twelve Kingdoms, Youka, one of the nyokai of Mt. Hou, explains to Queen Kei, Youko, of the story of Taiki. When he was still hatching from his egg, a shoku appears and takes him away to Japan. Meanwhile, Sugimoto talks with Kaname's, the young boy in the beginning of the episode, brother. He tells her that people would mysteriouls die around him, that he's cursed. Back in Mt. Hou, Youka continues the story on how they found Taiki ten years later. It was Kaname. One of the kirins opened a portal to Taiki, and allowed Sanshi, Taiki's caring nyokai, to bring him forth.

This was a really confusing episode. But what makes it so great is that it steadily builds up from the beginning, and delivers a great ending by the end of the episode. Having two stories in completely different perspectives makes you at first believe that two stories are taking place, so it's kind of neat by the end that you know they're connected. Well, it does seem apparent Kaname is Taiki, but it was still neat how they started telling the story from two different view points, leading to the connection.moreless

  • NOTES (3)

    • The book 'Sea of the Wind, Shore of the Labyrinth' only covers Taiki's time in the Twelve Kingdoms and not his return home.

The novel also explains the early life of the Kirin. Kirins are born in their animal form, they don't fear blood, and are nursed by their Nyokai. When Kirins are about 5 years old they are no longer nursed by their Nyokai, start to dislike blood, and learn to adopt a human form. Since Taiki has been gone for 10 years the Nyosen are worried that he will have problems being a kirin.

    • Taiki is revealed to be a black kirin, which is extremely rare.

    • A nyokai's purpose is to protect it's respected kirin.
