It is the distant future and the government has a law that commands all children to take and intelligence test when they reach the age of twelve. Dickie Jordan Jr. has just turned twelve and is very excited about taking this test. His parents' faces are less enthusiastic though and try to avoid answering any of his questions regarding the test. They even give him a present they should have only given to him two years later. Her mother can't stop worrying as she hears her son talking about how he is going to win that test very easily.
The examination day arrives and Dickie is taken by his father to the government facility where the tests are being taken. He is taken to a waiting room and after a few minutes his name is up and his father tells Dickie that he can't wait for him while the tests are being taken but that he will pick him up as soon as they are phoned by the government. Seconds later he is guided into a room where the testing begins. He is even given a trug to assure that he performs truthfully.
Later that day, Dickie's parents are phoned by the government. As they had feared all this time their son has completed all the tests successfully and has been found too smart, so the government killed him.
