The final show of the first season proves that the Two Ronnies were slowly reaching the correct speed. Gone are the useless variety acts; each Ronnie gets a good solo spot. The sketches involving both Ronnies are just so. (Only the sketch with John Cleese is a throwback to David Frost's shows, as if the Ronnies were not quite sure of themselves yet.) For the comic songs the stars create believable separate characters. Hampton Wick's surreal plot is explained in its final instalment. Ronnie Barker (as Gerald Wiley) just used the serial as an excuse for different take-offs on films and novels.

After this first season the two stars and their writers must have understood what made the show a success. Treat this season as a try-out.moreless
