Okay, so our Underdog is Earl J. Hicky from "My Name Is Earl," Sweet Polly was in "Taladega Nights," Simon was in "Elf," and Cad was in "Emperor's New Groove." That doesn't mean it will be a total loss! Jason Lee voiced Syndrome! He's awesome! And, from a dramatic standpoint, giving Underdog a background story makes sense. (And making it a cheesy background story goes with the flavor of the show!)

I am excited to see it, but I know it'll never do the original justice. Nothing can without Wally Cox (my he rest in Peace).

Hi Una! According to IMDB the release date is August 3, 2007. Sorry, but the only good that I see coming from this movie is a renewed interest in the old cartoon series. But . . . maybe it will be okay. I'll give it a chance.

This is not like the original series at all (and not just 'cause it's not a cartoon). Sure, Underdog wears the signature getup--and utters his infamous phrase--has "Sweet" Polly Purebread as his leading lady, and has Simon Bar Sinister as his main arch-foe (like Superman did via his costume, lady-fair Lois Lane, main antagonist Lex Luthor, etc.), but in the original series, Underdog lived under the mild-mannered guise of Shoeshine Boy (like Superman did via Clark Kent) & didn't have anyone be his master (that is, he lived--under no ownership--in Washington, DC [like Clark/Supes did in Metropolis & Smallville])!

And Walt would be seething in his cryrogentic chamber... For certainly if he were around, he wouldn't stand for this!

Underdog already HAD a background story (very Superman-esque) & it didn't require having a master or anything else this bastardization of a movie has done to poor, poor Underdog.

    Mmmmm...gotta disagree with you there.

Underdog never had a background story.

Unless it was in a comic that I never read, they never made an episode for his background

It was in a comic you never read. The creators of Total Television (the company that produced the series) penned the comic mere months after the pooch had become pretty much a worldwide celebrity. I used to have a copy back when issues of it were being sent out to promote the show's rerun return during its airtime on Nickelodeon in the 1990's, but sadly, over the years of my life, I must have either misplaced or simply just lost it. Thus, I should probably go to amazon to reserve for another copy before it becomes a collector's item or something. Here's a scan of the cover:
