  • A confusing attempt to humanize Ness

This could have been a great episode, but it failed because of its confusing plot. Several interesting attempts were made to humanize Ness: Barber's remark that Ness was once a happy-go-lucky guy who was so poisoned by cynicism that he suspected everyone of wrongdoing, his attempts to pull information out of a woman suffering from aphasia, etc. Unfortunately everything became a mess about halfway through. The dramatic ending, with its ironic attempt to point out that Ness has no heart, I'm guessing, was written first--now if only the rest of the episode logically concluded to that ending. [SPOILER] Ness doesn't quite act as sharply as he usually does--since when does he walk into an abandoned building alone and allow himself to get knocked out? And where was the rest of the Untouchables?

Oh, well, I enjoyed it nonetheless, if only because it offered a change of pace from the usual season 1 episode plot.moreless
  • Quite simply the worst episode of the series bar none.

I don't know what the hell the screenwriter was thinking when he wrote Head of Fire, Feet of Clay. I guess he wanted to write an episode with deep psychological underpinnings which would make the viewer think. Instead we get a convoluted mess where the viewer thinks that at the end he/she just wasted 50 minutes of their time. If I had my way every copy of Head of Fire, Feet of Clay in existence would be destroyed. The acting is almost as bad as the script. Even Robert Stack appears to give up about halfway through the episode. I will give some credit to Jack Warden though. He tried his best throughout the episode. If you can keep your composure while all around you is falling apart you are to be commended. I commend Mr. Warden but nothing else regarding Head of Fire, Feet of Clay.
