During mid-season of The Untouchables final year on the air the show returned to its roots a bit. Season Three executive producer Alan Armer returned to his post and instituted a back to basics approach by getting rid of a lot of the pathos and upping the violence and action content considerably. This approach didn't always succeed as the scripts were sometimes very mediocre but it does in Junk Man. This is a ball busting, sledgehammer of an episode. There's no watering down, very little pathos, and plenty of action and excitement.
Take special note here of the performance of Edward Binns as hoodlum Steve Ballard. Ballard is one of the more interesting and complex characters to emerge from Season Four. He's a vicious and brutal thug yet he has humanity and wants to quit the rackets and find help for his junkie girlfriend. Ballard's final downfall was that the law of the jungle was all he knew.
