  • Frank O'Dean gets out of prison after 10 years, only to be blackmailed into helping Augie Viale promote the slot machines racket; O'Dean he saved Ness' life before, so Viale feels O'Dean can get close enough to kill Ness (and get him out of his hair).moreless

This is one of my top ten episodes. I love the understated bond/relationship with Ness and O'Dean, as adversaries, who respect each other. It sounds like O'Dean had been a good man once and be comes one again to ensure the happiness of his only child, whom long thought him to be a dead war hero; As a pre-teen, I always felt bad about what happened to the alcoholic lawyer (before I realized they are shysters!), Julian Glass. Finally, the scene where Ness gets O'Dean to his daughter's fairy-tale wedding ("Don't let me fall Fed--not yet") and he's able to look at the happiness on her face and wish her good luck, my eyes water every time!moreless
  • Soap Opera Lover's Dream

    6.0
Average episode but there are some things of interest in it. For one, we get to see the inside of Ness's home for the only time in the series. In Season Three's Downfall we see the inside of his bachelor apartment but since that episode was set in early 1930 we have to assume it took place before Ness got married. Another is that radio broadcaster Floyd Gibbons' name is mentioned. Gibbons (played by Scott Brady) would later appear in a Season Four episode titled appropriately, The Floyd Gibbons Story.

One Armed Bandits is also a soap opera lovers dream. You have John Beradino who appeared on General Hospital, Larry Gates who appeared on Guiding Light, and Anthony George who appeared on Dark Shadows, Search for Tomorrow, and One Life to Live. Gates wins acting honors in this episode as alcoholic disbarred attorney Julian Glass.moreless
