  • Barbara Stanwyck-Round 2

Search for a Dead Man marks the second appearance of Barbara Stanwyck as Lt. Agatha Stewart of the Bureau of Missing Persons. Pretty much a filler episode here. Search for a Dead Man has less going for it than its companion episode, Elegy, but it does have the distinction of having the oddest and dumbest name for a gangster in the series--Rudy Portuguese. That's what the producers got for giving into the forces of political correctness.moreless

    • Joe Fuselli, a mob murder victim in this episode, has the same name as Keenan Wynn's character in the pilot episode of The Untouchables though they're obviously not the same person.

  • QUOTES (5)

    • Lt. Stewart: Funerals of newspaper reporters are always well attended.
      Rimer: By whom?
Lt. Stewart: A small army of broken-hearted saloon keepers.

    • Retzik: (to Rudy) You get what drops outta my pockets.

    • Ness: (about the body of Jake Portuguese) So you dumped him in the lake?
: What do I get for that...ninety days for contaminating Lake Michigan?

    • Narrator: (about the funeral of Jake Portuguese) It was a classic affair in the grand underworld tradition except that there was nobody left to mourn.

    • Lt. Stewart: Do you really have a $200 minimum for wreaths?
: Are you kiddin'? Lady this is the place where Johnny Torrio spent ten grand for flowers for Tito Grammercy's funeral...and he didn't even kill him!

  • NOTES (1)

    • Sadly, according to the IMDB, this was the final on-screen appearance of Grant Richards, who plays Arnie Retzik in this episode. Richards was killed in an automobile accident on July 4, 1963. Richards had previously appeared in The Organization, King of Champagne, The Genna Brothers, The Matt Bass Scheme, The Stryker Brothers, Man Killer, and Eddie O'Gara Story.
