  • Grandin v. Ness

Although Nitti is on hand and he's as nasty as ever, Ness's main foe in this one is not a gangster but a repected civic leader who has bumped off three businessmen so he himself can snatch their franchises for the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. When Ness accuses him of being in league with killers he gets sued for slander. Frank Nitti is only too willing to help put Ness on the breadlines but he demands a high price in return for his "services."

Pat Hingle gives a great guest performance as Mitchell Grandin, the respected civic leader who's secretly corrupt and Jeanne Cooper does well as a double dealing moll who's probably more loyal to her man than he deserves. But Bruce Gordon steals the episode with another gem of a performance as "the Enforcer." The scene where Nitti shows Grandin who's boss is a classic.moreless
