Victor: (to Alex and Benno) This is a warning from the Senate. We don't want Colescu here. Tell him.

Colescu: (about Victor Bartok) We make him sweat. We use the Tree.

Ness: You owe it to your people.
Victor: You ask a great deal, Mr. Ness. We are not like other people. For eight hundred years we have walked the earth, and every man's hand has been against us. We have learned a lesson. We have no friends. Only each other.

Ness: (to Magda) Maybe you'd talk easier in the light.

Ness: (to Magda) Tomorrow we'll know more about you than your own mother. Talk and we can both get some sleep.

Benosh: We will order our people not to drink his whiskey.
Fedor: Benosh as always finds the correct way. Colescu's strength is in his whiskey. We shall destroy his strength.

Rico: We just checked ourselves into another blind alley.
Ness: We need someone to lead us out.

Alex: Mr. Bartok, she's wrong. We are open--for business.

Ness: (to Magda) You're playing with some big boys now. It's a pretty rough game for a girl.

Magda: We think that some women are as smart as some men.
Ness: Some?

Ness: We're going downtown.
Alex: What are you gonna do?
Ness: You won't like it.

Benno: (about Alex) He's facin' a murder rap. He'll sing like a whole chorus.

Hobson: Eliot, you can't read a man's record into a trial. It's illegal. You know that.
Ness: Yeah.

Benno: I ain't goin' no further.
Colescu: You don't wanna go any further, all right. So stay. [shoots Benno]

Narrator: Suddenly, the Gypsies had lost their thirst. It was as if the plague had hit. For one man it had. For Janos Colescu.
Colescu: (counting the take) Nothin'. Don't even pay to add it up.

Colescu: Now we hit the next one--the girl.
Benno: But Ness is watchin' her night and day.
Colescu: The Feds gotta quit sometime. I can wait.

Colescu: (referring to his father's fate) Some things the dough don't pay for.

Colescu: (to Ness and Magda after seizing control of the Senate) My name is Colescu. Something you want?
