  • Crooked reporter Jake Lingle has been killed and ex-con Bill Hagen will give Ness tips on booze operations in exchange for info that will him get the $25K reward for Lingle's killer. Hagen can get $25K or double-cross Ness and get $225K; What will he do?moreless

This is one of my top three episodes (along with the Rusty Heller and Doreen Maney stories), probably because I had a crush on Jack Lord. Bill Hagen was in the war, was a private eye, was a family man, and eventually the right path in the end. Bill Hagen, is tough, smart, and a ladies' man. This is one of the very few episodes where Ness seems to have an understated bond/friendship with an "crook" (Frank O'Day in One-Armed Bandits is another good example); you almost hope they will keep in touch after hagen goes to California. Finally, who could forget the creepy blackjack scene where the two bosses are playing "21" with people's lives!moreless

This episode is based upon a true life Chicago murder case which happened during the period in which real life Untouchables were doing battle with Al Capone. About the only thing to recommend about Jake Lingle Killing is that you get to see Eliot Ness (Robert Stack) interact with the future Steve McGarrett (guest star Jack Lord). Part of the problem, as would be the case in several Season One episodes, is that you have a weak and unmemorable lead villain in Charles McGraw's Barney Bertsche (who was a real life Chicago gangster allied with Bugs Moran) thrown in with an average at best script. Future General Hospital star John Beradino does have a nice role as gangster Augie Viale. Beradino would return as Viale in One-Armed Bandits.moreless
