  • More Nitti would have been nicer.

Robert Middleton makes his second guest appearance of the series and he's minus the hairpiece he wore in Season One's Unhired Assassin where he portrayed Anton Cermak, the doomed Mayor of Chicago. Here Middleton plays nasty mobster Mayer Wartel who aspires to become the dominant mob power in Chicago in the days immediately following Al Capone's conviction for income tax evasion. Rip Torn is the co-lead baddie in The Masterpiece playing real life Mob hitman Harry Strauss aka Pittsburgh Phil.

Though both Middleton and Torn do good work here neither takes home the acting honors. That award goes to veteran character actor George Voskovec who plays doomed gunsmith Herman Kihn. Kihn's machinations help Ness bring down lead baddies Wartel and Pittsburgh Phil but at the cost of his own life.

I lowered my overall grade on this one a bit because the appearance of Bruce Gordon as Frank Nitti was wasted. Gordon has only a cameo at the beginning of the episode. Such was the way of many of Gordon's appearances in Season Two. Frank Nitti would be only a sinister figure lurking somewhere in the background instead of having a large role in the overall storyline.moreless
