Episode Summary

EDIT
The Snowball
AIRED:

It was not always the big mobsters that sold hootch on the streets. Sometimes it was a one-bottle-at-a-time bootlegger like Jackson Parker who sold his wood alcohol on school campuses. But after many students got terribly ill or died, Eliot Ness must go after Parker and his new "partner" Nitti.

  • The Robert Redford Episode

    8.5
Robert Redford gets nearly everyone's vote as the most despicable character in show history. He plays Jackson Parker, a clean cut college graduate turned bootlegger who deliberately sells wood alcohol to college students thus causing them to suffer blindness and death. Even Nitti is repulsed once he learns the truth about Parker and he does Ness a favor at show's end.

Redford is truly despicable as Parker but it is Bruce Gordon who dominates the episode as he gives his finest performance of the series in Snowball. Here Nitti is still rough and tough but he's not simply the machine gunning, acid throwing brute of the early seasons. He's a man who's capable of some humanity and some depth. The scene on the Lake Michigan pier between Redford and Gordon is Gordon's finest of the series.

Special mention needs to be made of the performance of Gerald Hiken in Snowball. Hiken's Benny Angel is perhaps the oddest character in show history. He's a borderline retard derelict who is one of society's rejects. Yet Hiken manages to endow the character with humanity so that he becomes almost tragic upon his demise.moreless
