Okay. They need to make scores higher than 10 because I keep rating these episodes 10's! Anyway, after this episode, I think I can say, this show IS the next Lost. There is no questions about it. It's got everything lost had (including one of the same actors) They both have mysteries, twists, cliffhangers, flashbacks, great in depth characters, insane writing, crazy good actors. Seriously this IS the new LOST. Anyways this episode was incredible. Flashbacks, again just like LOST, The Vampire Diaries' flashbacks give meaning to the characters and really help move along the story lines.

This episode was just crazy. So much happened! Bonnie goes on a date with Ben which ends with a huge twist and great cliffhanger. Flashbacks show how Damon and Stefan became to be enemies and how Katharine was taken into the tomb. We also find out that Anna's mother is in the tomb, which is why she wants to open it as well. Elena and Stefan find out that the Grim War is in his fathers grave, so they go there to dig it up while, Damon shows up later to dig it up himself and he eventually gets the Grim War. Elena and Stefan back at her house are recovering from Damon giving Elena some of his blood and Stefan realizes that Jeremy has Anna over and that she went to the "bathroom". Stefan freaks out and runs upstairs to find Elena missing from her room and the window wide open. and then......... (black screen) "The Vampire Diaries.

Outstanding cliffhangers and intense plot twists and insanely great writing & acting gives this episode another perfect 10/10 for the series.moreless
  • Flashbacks..

So.. this episode is mainly about the past and maybe more and more explains what really happened back then and opens up little bit more the relationship between the brothers.. as there are more reasons than the most obvious one for their tension.

The whole journal thing seems to be solved and I did not expected to be so major: going out to the thumb and trying to get Cathrine back.. And Anna becomes much cleared up too.. And like always.. nothing is done without purpose as Bonnie learns.

So.. even thought it had much flashbacks, it did explained and developed much. Weird, but I really liked it.moreless
  • A great deal of this episode deals with flashbacks of Katherine and the boys. In the here and now everyone is looking for the grimoire that speaks of how to release Katherine and the others from the tomb. Anna is seen from the past as Pearl's daughter.moreless

    ***** Spoilers Enclosed *****

It seems there were quite a few powerful and old vampires trapped in that tomb. We meet Katherine and her friend Pearl played by Kelly Hu who Johnathan Gilbert had fancied himself before they found out she was a vampire as well.

It seems that Pearl and Katherine both were able to walk during the day the same way the Salvatore brothers do today. Anna being from that far back and the realization that she is at least as old as the brothers and probably older is a revelation. So it seems she has as much or more at stake then Damon does.

Giuseppe Salvatore played by James Remar was excellent as the boys father and certainly was earnest in his work. The main question that comes up to me is how did the boys become vampires if they had already captured Katherine before she turned them? Interesting...

Not an overly exciting episode as these flashback type episodes can be. I found it interesting that a lot was easily revealed in this episode like Alaric's relationship to Damon the fact that his wife's body was never found, also that we believe from earlier the wife was Isabel who had Elena before she was adopted out. All very interesting twists.

Anna seems like your usual vampiress. Making minions to do her bidding and using them as long as they are useful to her. Bonnie of course being the witch she is was not duped, but now we don't know her fate at this point. This show has never been faint hearted about killing someone off, even a main character.

A fact filled historical romp through the lives of the brothers and some of how they got here. There is a lot yet to reveal. Hopefully we'll see this tomb situation resolved soon. Thanks for reading...moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (0)

  • QUOTES (21)

    • Elena: What exactly is a Grimoire anyway?
      Damon: It's a witch's cookbook.
Stefan: Every spell that a witch casts is unique onto itself so every witch would document their work.
      : Yeah. Cookbook.

    • Anna: You just couldn't live without me, huh?
Jeremy: Well, I kinda miss my daily dose of cute stalker chick.

    • Giuseppe: Do you know of any vampires?
Stefan: No. No, of course not. But are we to take what others say at face value? You always taught us so differently.
Giuseppe: Stefan, these creatures are of the darkest parts of hell. They have the ability to control your mind, seduce your spirit. They are deadly. And they must be destroyed. Those who stand with them, those who bring shame to their families, will be destroyed as well.

    • Damon: So you've been here the whole time, then why are we just crossing paths right now?
Anna: I like to use others to do my dirty work.
Damon: Like Logan Fell? Oh yeah, thanks for that. By the way, the little bastard shot me.

    • Damon: (referring to Stefan) There was a time that I trusted him more than anyone.
Elena: Trust breeds trust. You have to give it to get it.
      Damon: Are you lecturing me?
Elena: Do you need to be lectured?
Damon: (referring to Katherine) I just want her back. I'm sure you can understand that.
Elena: I can understand that you would do anything for her, yes.
Damon: Then you understand what I will do if anyone gets in my way.

    • (Damon threatens to hurt Elena unless Stefan gives him Giuseppe's journal)
      Stefan: You won't kill her.
Damon: (forces Elena to drink his blood) I can do one better. Give me the book, Stefan, or I'm snapping her neck, and you and I will have a vampire girlfriend.

    • Elena: Do you think Damon really believes us, that we're both trying to help him?
Stefan: I don't think Damon knows what to believe. Trust isn't something that comes naturally to him.

    • Elena: (referring to the plan to open the tomb) Since when am I helping?
Damon: Well, Stefan's helping, and you've taken up residence in Stefan's bed. Ergo...

    • (Damon finds Elena and Stefan at Giuseppe's grave)
Stefan: I can't let you bring her back, I'm sorry.
Damon: So am I...for thinking for even a second that I could trust you.
Stefan: You are not capable of trust. The fact that you're here means that you read the journal and you were planning on doing this yourself.
Damon: Of course I was gonna do it by myself, because the only one I can count on is me! You made sure of that many years ago, Stefan.

    • Damon: (To Anna) Damn, you're strong for a little thing.

    • Elena: (to Bonnie) You're a powerful witch goddess. Seize the day, Brunhilda.

    • Bonnie: (On Elena to Ben) She's my sister. I'd die for her.

    • (Jeremy's cell phone rings but he doesn't answer)
      Damon: Who are you dodging?
Jeremy: This girl, Anna. She can be, uh...persistent.
      Damon: Is she hot?
Jeremy: Yeah...yeah, but she can be weird.
      Damon: Hot trumps me.

    • Stefan: How long have you been aware of me?
Alaric: I learned just recently. What about your brother?
      Stefan: You met Damon.
Alaric: Who do you think killed my wife?
Stefan: You certain it was Damon?
      Alaric: I witnessed it.
Stefan: If you're here for revenge, this is going to end very badly for you.

    • Alaric: I made a few discoveries about your town.
Stefan: So you show up like Van Helsing?

    • (Alaric tries to shoot Stefan with a wooden stake from a compressed air gun)
Stefan: I'm not gonna hurt you, unless you try that again.

    • Elena: You know, I really think that Damon believes that everything he's done, every move that he's made, he's done for love. It's twisted, but...kind of sad.
Stefan: There are other ways to get what you want. You don't have to kill people. Damon has no regard for human life. He enjoys inflicting pain on others. For a hundred and forty-five years, every single time that I have let my guard down and let Damon back into my life, he's done something to make me regret that. I'm not gonna make that mistake again.

    • (After Katherine drains her victims blood in front of Damon)
Damon: What happens to the bodies?
Katherine: I'll take them into the woods and the other animals will finish them off.

    • (Damon walks in as Stefan and Elena are in bed)
      Damon: Rise and shine, sleepyheads!
      Stefan: What are you doing?
      Elena: Damon, please!
      Damon: Oh, stop being smutty.
Stefan: Seriously, get out of here.
Damon: If I see something I haven't seen before, I'll throw a dollar at it.

    • Giuseppe Salvatore: (To Stefan in a flashback): These creatures are the darkest parts of hell ... they are deadly and must be destroyed.

    • Damon: (to Stefan and Elena, after they agree to help Damon with his plan) You know, I really like this whole menage-a-threesome team thing. It's got a bit of a kink to it. Don't screw it up!
