The Vampire Diaries S05E07: "Death and the Maiden"

HELLO MY SHADOW SELF

HELLO MY SHADOW SELF

HELLO MY SHADOW SELF

HELLO MY SHADOW SELF

HELLO MY SHADOW SELF

HELLO MY SHADOW SELF

Have you ever been more tired of a phrase? Get out of here, you dumb phrase! It was already such a cringeworthy line the first time it was said out loud, but at least then it came coupled with a surprise twist and also the sight of somebody getting shoved into a safe and rolled off a cliff. Let's be real, Silas could have said literally ANYTHING in that situation and it would have been awesome.  Look:

"Bye homie."  * shoves Stefan into safe, rolls off cliff *

"Quarry'd!"  * shoves Stefan into safe, rolls off cliff *

"Do you like pumpkin pie?"  * shoves Stefan into safe, rolls off cliff *

"I can't wait to wear your boxers."  * shoves Stefan into safe, rolls off cliff *

But NOPE, instead we got "Hello, my shadow self" and then we had to hear that damn thing at the beginning of EVERY episode this season? I've been hearing rumblings from people who are not 100 percent in love with Season 5 so far and my current working theory is that this phrase is a major part of that reaction. Maybe the baffling/boring Silas-Tessa-Amara saga is part of this reaction also, but mostly just that phrase. "Hello, my shadow self." GET IT OUT OF HERE. Throw it in la poubelle.

Okay, phew! Had to be said. Look, you need to know something: "Death and the Maiden" was one of the best episodes of the season so far. It was, it really was. First of all, MULTIPLE doppelgangers got stabbed to death. But also it was exciting and heartfelt and the dialogue was noticeably wonderful. The storytelling was just as dense as ever, but everyone spoke in heightened, almost poetic dialogue that paradoxically gave the characters room to breathe for once. This show often totally foregoes character moments in the service of neck-snappin', but "Death and the Maiden" gave people some really beautiful things to say even while the insanity swirled around like unexplained scraps of paper during witchcraft. I really, really enjoyed it. I mean, come on:

Okay let's talk about this episode!

Everything started at a bus stop in Delaware Philly where Silas, a powerful, formerly immortal wizard, was waiting for a Greyhound. As wizards do. And he was very annoyingly monologuing about his love life to a pair of strangers, who were the best audience surrogates of the season so far:

I've never felt more emotionally invested in extras as I was with these people, especially when Silas could detect that they did not care about his story or crazy claims, and he forced them to look at his neck wound.

But because Silas isn't just a boring storyteller, he's also jerk, so he decided to liquefy the one dude's insides for no reason.

Ugh, typical Silas. Then he threatened the girlfriend and she ran out into traffic. Okay, the whole scene was pretty funny but I still couldn't help but relate to this poor couple. Don't worry guys, we're right there with you. For about eight episodes now. (Quick fun flashback: Remember when Silas was a taller, hooded figure with a Cenobite face and mysterious intentions? Don't you miss those days? We were so innocent then.)

So then Stefan woke up with a brain full of memories and a doppelganger looking to rewrite some history while she still had the chance.

Unfortunately what Elena didn't know was that Stefan remembered everything now, so he wasn't super impressed with her attempts to get a fresh start. Also he was still being plagued by nightmares about his stay in the safe, especially the time he was rescued by some RANDOM DUDE.

I mean, we knew that Tessa had been the one to hasten Stefan's rescue, but I guess she hired Max Headroom to actually do the dirty work? Makes sense.

Whatever the explanation, this memory was putting Stefan ON EDGE. I mean, look at what he did to this glass of coffee! But I will say this, and it's not to keep harping on how awful Amnesia Stefan was, but Regular Stefan was immediately cooler and more chill and nice to his friends, so I was glad to have him back. Credit where credit's due, the dang HERO of this show was no longer a piece of sh*t.

Oh man, Amara. So they had Amara tied up in the Salvatore dungeon where she was yelling at her shoes or whatever. (Turned out it was ghosts, but still.) Not only that but she was desperate to commit suicide so she was biting her wrists SO MUCH. Very gross.

So then we got a quick follow-up about Katherine's forced consultation with Whitmore's best and most improbably handsome professor/doctor/secret society member. He couldn't find anything wrong with her medically except for the fact that she was 500 years old, so in his opinion she probably had a few months to live. (Which would be what in TVD time? 35 more episodes?) But Katherine was NOT happy to hear this.

I liked how this guy is supposed to be super curious and scheme-y when it came to vampire biology, but here he was, presented with the first ever vampire-to-human in the history of time and he did NOT care. Like, that kind of thing was just not interesting to him. He just had too many episodes of Sleepy Hollow on his DVR to possibly care about this. But seriously though: POOR KATHERINE. I'm very nervous now, guys.

Meanwhile, Silas was en route to Mystic Falls and he seemed dead-set on... I can barely remember. Murdering Amara? Who knows. I have been confused by the three ancient characters' wants/needs for a while now, but that's not necessarily a complaint. I like being confused. My only complaint was that it has been kiiiinda boring. Would it kill any of them to go after world domination or something?

At least Stefan suddenly developed an urge to make shit HAPPEN.

At this point everyone still needed Silas to bring Bonnie back or whatever, but Stefan was so tired of having flashbacks that he decided Silas needed to die in order to be happy again. Something like that. I liked when Elena gave him the side-eye though, that was a good part. Speaking of good parts...

Then this happened:

TWO OF MY FAVORITE THINGS. Amara made a big deal about how miserable she'd been for thousands of years living as a statue in a wooden crate and listening to Jersey warehouse workers talk about, I don't know, the Jets. But in my opinion this sight probably made it all worth it. Jeremy made and then personally delivered a delicious sandwich

And Amara recognized him immediately! I guess he'd made a big splash when he was chillin' on The Other Side all those weeks. Jeremy was probably doing so much crossfit, he became "that guy." All the ghosts just standing around annoyed by him doing tons of push-ups but then all secretly appreciating the results. Ugh, ghosts are all just jealous creeps. Let Jeremy get his exercise! Anyway, yeah, Amara remembered him for sure.

Also she could see Bonnie.

This was a very cool turn of events! Because Amara was the anchor to The Other Side, part of the deal was she could see everyone, living or dead. Bonnie seemed particularly stoked that someone could finally see her. But then she tried to touch Amara and Amara was NOT having it.

Haha okay fine, the reasoning for this would come into play later, but it still made me LOL (mildly chuckle) when Amara straight-up recoiled at Bonnie's touch. Something tells me that was not the first time Bonnie had experienced that kind of treatment. She has mean friends and family sometimes, is what I'm trying to say.

Um, first of all, look at this picture. When is the Mystic Falls Amateur Bodybuilding Competition, exactly? How many weeks out is it still? Because sometimes it seems like this show should be called The Protein Shake Diaries. There needs to be a town-wide bodybuilding event soon because it's like EVERY male character on this show is in bulking mode? Or maybe just an amateur wrestling day. I don't know. This town is populated by BRUTES lately. I'm ok w/it tbh.

Anyway, at least Jeremy had his thinking cap on, because when he realized that being an anchor to purgatory entailed walking on both sides of the veil, he decided that maybe Amara and Bonnie could switch roles? Good plan! But they needed a powerful wizard/ess to do this so Damon had to go interrupt Tessa's teatime and see if she was interested in basically destroying Amara.

Haha classic Tessa. Zero hesitation.

Meanwhile at college, Nadia showed up and called Caroline a sad loser and then tried to confront Katherine about ditching her in a motel after they had their mother-daughter breakthrough.

But Katherine was not interested in that stuff. She was DYING. I mean, she didn't tell Nadia that, and maybe she should have, but yeah it was clear to us she had a lot on her mind. And now, suddenly the gang in Mystic Falls needed her to give blood for their anchor-switcheroo ritual. Because doppelgangers are as powerful as a comet or whatever I don't know I'm confused and I haven't eaten in days. Where can I buy a bag of Let's? Does it come in salt & vinegar flavor? #mentalprobs

My favorite thing about seeing all three lady doppelgangers hanging out in tableau was that you could immediately tell who was who from a mile away. Like, GUESS WHO WAS HUGGING HERSELF.

(No but seriously, have the Emmys voters ever HEARD of The CW? Would they even watch For Your Consideration screeners if they arrived in the mail or would they just foist them off on the help? Because Dobrev's been doing next-level work for a while now for real. Also, did she make anybody else cry in Perks or do I just need to go away for a while?)

Anyway, I loved how all three even drew blood differently:

There was a good joke in here where Katherine was overtly jealous of Elena's NBD attitude about slicing her palm. I still wish these characters (and ALL characters) would figure out a better way to draw blood than slicing palms though. WE USE HANDS SO MUCH. Keep them in good condition, people!

So then Tessa started doing her spell, and it was about what you'd expect. Speaking in tongues, exploding lamps, all that type of stuff.

My favorite thing about witchcraft is definitely the part where thousands of pieces of scrap paper mysteriously appear and fly around the room. Magic is a notorious source of litter.

Unfortunately before Tessa could finish the spell, Silas arrived and ruined everything! I loved when she started levitating glassware at him and he responded by levitating a fire poker at her. Bull's eye!

Meanwhile, since the power was out, Stefan saw an opportunity and he whisked Amara outside. I can't remember why. To get Silas out there so that he could kill him? Sure, why not. I love an indoor forest, so any opportunity for them to get out there I'm happy about.

I liked that Silas answered his cell phone right in the middle of murdering Tessa. Who wouldn't. It's like how everybody on TV always stops having sex in order to answer the phone. Same with millennia-in-the-making grudge murders.

Meanwhile, this episode anticipated what we were all wondering: Couldn't Katherine's problems be solved if she became a vampire again? NOPE.

Because Caroline is an angel sent from heaven above, she selflessly opened a vein for Katherine but no dice! Katherine's body just rejected it. Well, that settles that. (I legit loved the symmetry of Caroline possibly helping Katherine become a vampire again. So good.)

So then Silas ran outside and found Amara and they tearfully agreed that it was time to die.

I know how you guys love it when I rant about stuff, so I hope you enjoy this too:

FUCK SUICIDE and this show's glorification of it.

FUCK SUICIDE.

FUCK IT.

I am serious: Of all the terrible messages TVD could be sending out to its young viewers (we're all young right?), this idea of suicide as a salve, a release, a cure, this is the absolute WORST message possible. It's worse than the show's desensitized attitude toward murder. It's worse than its many questionable racial subtexts or various lack of representations and whatnot. The notion that suicide is something to be craved by someone who has "lived too long" is offensive and outrageous and reprehensible. THIS is what TV watchdog groups should be protesting. Not sex or profanity. Heroic suicides. Truly shameful. Guess what, everybody. There is no afterlife. Yeah, I said it. There is nothing after this. Death is a vast nothingness so dark and profound that our brains aren't equipped to fathom it. The only thing our brains are equipped to do is invent mythological alternatives that bring us comfort while we stare into that abyss.

Death is literally THE WORST.

That is why I'm so angry about this. The assertion that suicide is a reasonable choice that will open the door to a better place is just so unbearably nihilistic. The idea that there is a "better place" devalues life, which is the most valuable thing we will ever have. The Vampire Diaries is, among other lesser things, all about wish fulfillment. It's about finding love in unusual places. It's about becoming superhuman and feeling emotions more intensely and saving your friends' lives and finding yourself surrounded by impossibly attractive love interests. Wish fulfillment! Yes, bad things happen too but only in the service of good things like redemption, introspection, learning, changing. Okay, sure, I guess everybody universally wishes that there IS something after life, so TVD is probably just playing into that wish fulfilment also. But I'm drawing the line at characters CRAVING death. Nope. Just no.

All this glorification of suicide--which may not be intentional on the writers' part but is certainly the end result--is the worst and most offensive thing The Vampire Diaries has ever done. I love this show so much and deeply respect its underrated sophistication but I don't want anyone to think this is okay. It's not. Suicide is not okay, not ever, and it's extremely irresponsible for this show to associate it with anything other than reprehensible shame.

Seriously, fuck suicide. Not cool, TVD. Not cool.

So then Stefan ran up and choked Silas and Silas zapped Stefan with wizard magic.

Then Stefan picked up a knife and threw it at Silas and he died.

Then Amara pulled the knife out of Silas and stabbed herself and she died.

Bye forever, idiots.

Damon didn't arrive in time, so he had to witness Amara bleed out or whatever. But it turned out they didn't need her alive anyway? Or maybe she was still slightly alive enough for the spell to work? Or I guess she'd already bled on Bonnie's grimoire? Any of these options probably worked. Anyway, Tessa proceeded as planned.

AND THE ANCHOR-SWITCHEROO WORKED.

Hey, welcome back, Bonnie! I was legitimately happy to see her not be a ghost anymore. That was a raw deal, girl. Now you get to, I don't know, get a haircut and have shirtless hugs with Jeremy and go to college. Plus you get to spend some time with your besties:

Whoa, don't look TOO happy, ladies.

So yes, this changes everything. I'm sure now that Bonnie's alive she'll suddenly become an essential member of this circle of friends and she'll have tons of things to do and new responsibilities and she definitely won't just get side plots involving botched spells or whatever. Welcome to a new chapter, girl!

You earned it.

Meanwhile another asshole committed suicide, and she did it without even helping save Katherine's life as she'd promised.

EVERYBODY PLS TAKE NOTE OF KATHERINE'S UNQUENCHABLE LUST FOR LIFE. There is a reason she is the best character.

Okay bye.

UGH Tessa came back! But she was a ghost now, and she was demonstrating the newest loophole Bonnie would have to deal with.

Ghosts will have to touch Bonnie in order to cross into The Other Side and it will hurt Bonnie like h*ck. Whoops, that looks plenty sucky. But it's also kind of cool? I like the metaphor of it, anyway.

Meanwhile in the indoor forest Stefan was burying Silas and Elena came out to try and make his trauma about her.

I guess she still felt super guilty about when he was in the safe and she didn't notice or try to find him AT ALL. I get that she needed his forgiveness or whatever, but did she have to rub it in how great of a time she'd had all summer? Honestly, Stefan won major points for being so cool about this display of obliviousness. Or maybe he was just hiding it well.

But he did make it clear that nothing hurt his feelings more than the time some random guy opened the safe door instead of Elena or Damon. Fair enough. I mean there are only 10-12 citizens left in Mystic Falls these days, so it's just straight-up insulting that a random person found Stefan before his own loved ones did.

Then Katherine and Caroline returned to their dorm room but Nadia had stolen Katherine's bag in order to convince her to go Prague with her.

It was an interesting tactic on Nadia's part, but it didn't work. I did LOVE when Caroline realized who Nadia was though.

One more complaint: It bothered me that TVD seemed to be backtracking on the burgeoning friendship between Katherine and Caroline here. It was obviously the best part of last week's episode and my favorite thing to have happened all season, so for these characters to sort of flippantly agree that they hate each other felt cheap and unnecessary. I DID like the reminder that Katherine killed Caroline once, but did this episode really have to reset this relationship? Couldn't we hold onto that new spark of a friendship just a little longer? Anyway, maybe Caroline learning that Katherine has a daughter and is dying will make Caroline go into full-Caroline mode (i.e. forcing her help onto Katherine). That would be neat. Otherwise I will be sad if these two don't hang anymore.

In my opinion Silas is dead. Stefan buried him and everything. Man, I really hope he stays dead. What a bummer of a plotline.

But just when we thought it was over, Stefan kept having huge and painful flashbacks to his safe-drowning days!

Oh, TVD. Must you? Just when we thought we'd made a clean break from this storyline the cliffhanger said NOPE. Oh well.

Wow, sorry this recap took an angry turn at one point. I still liked the episode overall? When I wasn't fuming about the suicide stuff, I was really moved and thrilled by the dialogue and humor and seemingly more profound emotions on display than usual. Also, I'm pretty jazzed about the doppelganger population being severely cut down? Obviously this series was going to have to address THAT supernatural element sooner or later, but the doppelganger exploration did not seem very successful to me. Hopefully we're moving on! Let's learn more about that professor and his lab and hopefully see him in a t-shirt or something WHATEVER I DON'T KNOW.

Oh, and do we even need to talk about the scenes from next week? Clearly we have things to look forward to, guys. I'm not sure any of us are ready.

OK BYE SORRY BYE

QUESTIONS:

... Who will you miss most: Silas, Tessa, or Amara?

... Is it the end of the road for Caroline and Katherine's detective agency?

... Does Bonnie deserve a spa day?

... Should Stefan set up an OKcupid profile?

I think TVD is the worst at sending positive messages, but well, it's entertaining. For what I can remember we get:

- Your bf/gf is a killer? That's not a reason to end the relationship, actually is quite attractive.
- Commit Genocide is ok if you are helping Elena (let's kill Kol, even if that means killing tons of vampires)
- You will never get over a break up, it is actually impossible. You are fated to: A) Became a vengeful witch or B) Live with your brother and your "true love", waiting for your chance to come. We get it, Love triangles are intense but not healthy at all.
- We can add the heroical suicide to that and... well, Jeremy seems to have a thing for dead people (Anna, now Bonnie). I actually think that now that Bonnie is alive, he will loose interest in her (truth is I never enjoyed that ship)

"...it's extremely irresponsible for this show to associate it with anything other than reprehensible shame."

Shame? Sure you're not religious?

I'm another person who disliked your suicide rant, and particularly the bit I quoted. Have you ever been suicidal? Do you understand what utter pain and suffering people are enduring to want to actually end their lives?

It is NOT shameful. It's a terrible thing to feel, but it is NOT shameful, and I hope no depressed, suffering, suicidal person reads those words, because it's the absolute last thing they need to hear when they already feel so broken and worthless - that they should also be feeling ashamed of wanting to end it. No, that is what's really irresponsible, and I'm disgusted that you would say such a thing. They need love, not to be berated.

Suicide is a horrible thing, but it's reality, and shouldn't be out of bounds when it comes to art. It's not like they were glamorising suicide - Amara only desired it so much because she'd been bloody tortured for 2000 years. If you're worried about young eyes, I'd be much more concerned with all the murder (which you did mention) than with someone who's in pain wanting to die.

I understand that producers and writers should be very careful about how they depict suicide in shows that young people watch, but that's about as far as my agreement with you goes.

Desperately clinging to an unnatural, immortal life is not healthy or balanced and shouldn't be looked up to either.

Dude, I get that you're sharing you're opinion on suicide, and I respect that, but the thing that bothered me the most was for you to outright say that 'there is NO afterlife'. Saying that it's your opinion is one thing and then for you to just come out and state it like it's a fact- I mean, that's outrageous. There's nothing I find more abhorrent than a bitter atheist trying to persuade others to believe their crappy ideals just because they're not patient enough to find out the real answer. Can you PROVE there's no afterlife? No. Oh, and another thing- you said that 'the idea that there is a "better place" devalues life' which is just a misconstruction to support your sad lie. I won't argue that life is the most precious gift we will ever have, but that's because it was intended for us to learn and to grow. For us to just cease all wisdom and knowledge is pointless and cruel. THAT'S the real 'devalue'. I mean, I don't know about you Price, but I believe was put on this earth for a purpose. What about you?

Awwww so sad that this Qetsiyah's plotline is over. I LOVED it more than The Originals's current plotline. The actress who played Qetsiyah was great, her facial expressions were amazing.

And yes, Nina should get an Emmy! She's outdone herself! I could immediately tell who was who. I was excited to see the triquetra (reminded me of Charmed). Unfortunately Amara died too quickly. I always wanted to see Nina played three different characters. I'm hoping Tatia will appear some day.

The last conversation between Silas and Amara was sooo good! Paul and Nina always have great chemistry on screen in any given roles.

Wow, God you are an idiot. Your rant on suicide was completely unfounded. So instead of teaching people to accept death when it is their time, we should teach people to desperately cling to life that they can't have, causing them to go psychotic stressing over an event that they cannot prevent? Guess what moron, you're going to die one day too. I don't know if you know that, but you'll be lucky to live to be 75 years old, much less 500. In fact, Amara and Silas accepting that it was wrong for them to want immortality and that they should die was the most profound thing TVD has ever displayed. In fact, it goes back to the original idea of how vampirism is an unnatural state of existence. Remember way back when the originals were first introduced and their mom wanted to kill them because she regretted making them immortal? Remember when Rebecca wanted to be human so she could live and die? In addition, Katherine's desire to live is what has caused the deaths of hundreds of people on the show. And you want people to imitate her, be inspired by her? What the fuck is wrong with you? I am never reading a review from you again. I thought the doppelganger mythology was very successful and I enjoyed this arc. And hell yeah, there is an afterlife. Aren't you in for a surprise when you die. Oh wait. You don't believe in death. Have fun wasting your money on millions of dollars worth of plastic surgery for the rest of your life and living off a breathing tube in a comatose state so your children and grandchildren hate you for refusing to pass on their inheritance. Thank God the writers don't take cues from your reviews.

so i wasn't a huge fan of what was said in the recap, but what you just said was so amazingly ridiculous that it somehow made me agree with the author more.

I really don't like that the old batty witch got what she wanted. At least she'll be bugging the sh*t out of Silas on the other side. But he didn't pass through Bonnie when he died, so did he pass through Amara? Maybe he made it through to the good side during the transfer.

And how did the bat know Silas was dead?

Unfortunately on this show suicide are used for the same reason love triangles are made as a plot device.

I couldn't resist to mention but my fav screen cap for this ep had to be...

While I can understand the motivations for some of the suicides - particularly Amara's - I applaud Price for his commentary on suicide.

i'm fairly okay with everything he said except for the "reprehensible shame" part. that's a downright disgusting thing to say.

I've noticed a disturbing amount of people reacting pretty negatively towards Price in this comment section, about his views concerning the way in suicide was handled on the show. Even some saying he has no right to make his views known, yet, if they are free to let their opinions known, then, it stands to reason Price should also be allowed to state his. Because of this I just want to say, as someone who has lost and buried loved ones who took their own lives, it's a life changing heartache that never really goes away. So THANK YOU, Price, from the bottom of my heart, Thank you.

I almost threw a celebratory party when this episode was over. Not because it was bad, but because this dumb plot-line is OVER!!!!! Gone!!! Dunzo!! I could not be happier. The whole story about Silas and Amara and Tessa/Quetsiya (sp? JK NO ONE CARES) was so nonsensical it was ridiculous.
I do agree about the suicide stuff, though. Pretty damn uncool of the writers, whether it was intentional or not.

These screenshots made my day, Price!

I was literally ROTFL because it's SO TRUE! Elena was definitely trying another tactic in her "Make Stefan Love Me" plan, and the look on Stefan's face is like, "Elena, WTF are you doing?" LOL

Questions:

1) Surprisingly, Silas. He was hilarious last two episodes. Nice to see SOMEBODY having fun as a human, even if he was a warlock.
2) Nope, the acknowledgment of past feelings will lead to reconciliation. Caroline will comfort Katherine and try to save her again soon.
3) No, she deserves a bitch smack. Amara has been screaming, crying, and talking to herself since they met her. She TOLD Jeremy and Bonnie that she couldn't tell the difference. Silas is a sociopath, but he does not need to be in a padded room so clearly Amara's lunacy was Achor related. Why don't these guys ever ask questions?! Once again, Bonnie ignores consequences despite her speech to Jeremy a few episodes ago. FAIL!
4) Naa, he should continue to take his trip to Portland (get away from Elena) and bring Katholine with him. Or ya know, they could stop by New Orleans...lol

So Silas will obviously be back because Bonnie can see him.
Also Amara wanted to die so bad, because she was feeling all those deaths(like bonny did in the end) and I guess every second alive will make her feel some pains.
Also, Did Quetsya kill herself very painfully on purpose, so Bonny would suffer? I am gonna miss that bitch

I wouldn't mind snarky Silas bitching at Bonnie for her stupidity. Somebody needs to. I know they were short on time, but she could have asked Amara what being the Anchor meant, I mean really. Clearly, the girl was losing her mind from it.

I don't think I'll miss these new characters too much, they had some good moments here and there but I'd be interested in new storylines now.

Katherine decided to stay so I don't think it's the end for Katherine&Caroline. At least I hope so. And that there will generally be a lot of Katherine stuff in the series,

Bonnie's story was actually slightly interesting. I don't think she needs spa days, she has Jeremy-days.

Stefan always was much more interesting coupled with anyone but Elena.

Now I'd like to see if the new hunky vampire survived and what the professor is all about. One would think the rest of the season would focus on this Augustine thing now.

So, if supernatural ghosts have to touch the anchor to get to The Other Side... then why haven't any of our previous friendly ghosts mentioned this before? Mason, Lexie, Alaric, Jeremy, Bonnie, etc... "Hey by the way, when I died I had to pop on over to NJ and touch this creepy statue that looked just like Elena." You'd think that at least one of them would notice and feel it important enough to mention.

Writing mistake? Or do ghosts forget about the anchor after they've crossed?

Whatever. I'm not looking forward to 15 more episodes of Bonnie's whining and screaming.

The writers just wanted another way to torture Bonnie since they killed all her family members, ghost were the next best thing.

Plot hole, simple as that. Just forget it or fill it with your imaginiation, usually better than the crap writiers usually do when they try to keep their face and fill a plot hole.

I also hope Bonnie being the anchor will only stay for an episode or two, anymore than that will be completely rid us of the experience she's having and it only be annoying for us viewers.

im pretty sure the writers wants to take their time for Elena to find out there is someone else that looks like her....stop worrying about the little things lol..

I agree on the suicide thing - However, I think that Amara's life was "completed" that way to make clear how much suffering she had gone through. Cause now Bonnie is the anchor and she will have the same fate. So the show is trying to overload Bonnie's character with even more heroic suffering before getting rid of her. As I think they will.

I hate what they've done to Stefan and Bonnie.

The show should be renamed to "what do we do next to keep on torturing Stefan and Bonnie" intead of the Vampire Diaries. It's actually disgusting, what the writers keep putting them through.

True. However, the mistake comes from the very beginning I think. Stefan problem is that you cannot hold that long the highschool romance and still keep it interesting, specially when you have a character like Damon right there. With Bonnie it is probably a casting issue. Both characters have been less interesting than the others and they have tried to revamp them by making them more sympathetic through suffering. I don't think it works, Stefan is a lot better when he is relaxed and fun. The only dramatic character should be Elena, we have enough with that!

nah, it's just clear favoritism. here is the full story.

the show was written/created by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec. (executive producers of the show) Kevin left after S03 ended. Here is what he said about Stefan and Elena - "This show is always going to be about Stefan and Elena. It has to be. They're soulmates."

Once Kevin left, the complete destruction and assassination of Elena's character happened. (sire bond) Thanks to Julie Plec, Elena has no brain, or voice. Elena has been reduced to a prize. Elena is something Damon "got". Damon "got the girl". She's no longer someone who makes decisions for herself. She's just there so that Damon can be happy...

Anyway, you probably like Damon, so I won't go into details as to how much I despise him.

the thing is - Stefan has always been the hero of the story. Even in the books, Stefan is the good brother, the moral hero/compass. So Kevin was right. The show is supposed to be about Stefan and Elena. boring or not, he should be treated better.

Same goes for Bonnie. She used to be treated better in Seasons 1-3. Once Kevin left, the show was literally destroyed by Plec and her playing favoritism. Always pandering to the Damon/Delena stans while Bonnie/Stefan and every other character get treated like shit. lol <

I agree that he should be treated better, and defenitely this is not going in the direction of Stefan and Elena being soul mates. It feels as if they have tried to give a turn to the relationships and get Elena back to Stefan, but so far it doesn't look like it's working. However, Damon will be burn as a partner for Elena soon enough. I thought they would rout for Matt, but he's no vampire material, so I don't know what comes next. I don't hate any characters in the show, but I always like the ones that say fun things better, so that is Caroline and Damon for me. And eventually Katherine. I think that Damon's character will stand better the misfortunes and unhappiness than Stefan's character, so it doesn't really matter if he's with Elena or not. He will just start snapping necks for no reason again and that would be the end of it LOL. In my humble opinion :)

Ugh, if they kill Bonnie again this season I will be so mad. Not only would we have listened to her whining combined with Elena's me, me, me nonsense for nothing, but that makes her funeral from this season (which was heartfelt and sad) even more meaningless then her standing right there to give her own eulogy.

Yes, they have tried very hard to make us care about Bonnie, haven't they.

Tried, and failed, at least to me. Her character just never felt developed, and she's stuck in this cycle. People blame it on everyone using Bonnie, but most of the actual big spells were done by Bonnie herself after someone told her not to and she just never learns. How many consequences is one meant to endure? I think next time the spirits should just delete her completely from the universe like the Observers did to Peter on Fringe.

And basically I don't like almost all new characters. Nadia - useless and totally forgettable. Tessa - meh. Silas and Amara - that's Nina and Paul, so... And now we have Bonnie back :-(
So truly new characters are Professor, Jesse and professor's nephew or whoever. Sp please, more of them! Less dopplegangers!

I'm so glad that this Nadia woman is gone. What was the point of having her anyway. Well, yeah, she's Kat's daughter, but it mattered for 5 minutes tops.

OK, so much happened, where to start...it was a fascinating episode...as a few doppelgangers are dead....Silas gone. Amara gone. Tessa gone...even she is no doppelganger..still dead. Katherine aging and dying...poor thing..she is never lucky....Stefan has his memories back, but if that is a good thing or not...no idea...liked him better, when he was light Stefan. Bonnie back...Nice...!!
But scary Tessa, had ofcourse something at her sleeve and tricked Bonnie...poor thing, will go nuts with a the supernaturals passing through her...!!

You realise they weren't trying to glorify suicide in a way that say 90210 or something would. This is a supernatural show, we're talking about mystical immortal witches and wizards and anchors who have been around for 2000 years, one who has apparently been getting stabbed like a MOFO every time a dead person passed through her, I think that justifies their desire to die. I felt that your rant was a little over the top and unnecessary. You have to look at these things in the context of the show and what it is representing on that level.

Now that my rant is over I thought that was a great episode. I personally think Katherine is refusing the get close to Nadia because she knows that she is going to die in a few months (hopefully not!), she doesn't want to get close to her daughter and then die on her, causing her more pain in the long run. Also Katherine and Caroline still have that relationship, I feel as though when they were discussing how they hate each other it was more of them just saying words but underneath they've starting to build a friendship.

Elena and stefan are a snoozefest, but I actually thought the death of Amara, Silus and Tessa were great. Here were three previously immortal creatures finally coming to their demise. I'm looking forward to getting a "cure" for Katherine, maybe now that Bonnie is back she can work some magic and fix her up....hopefully she's learnt a thing or two now. Also poor bonnie, she's going to be going through hell!

Plus-in this universe there clearly IS an afterlife. You can say what you will about the real universe not having a heaven or hell if that's what you want to believe, but the great thing about creating a fictional universe is that you can make up the rules. In VD mythology, the "other side" is proof enough that when they die their energy goes somewhere. If you lived in that reality and still refused to believe in life after death you'd be an idiot. They have actual proof!

Sooooo why would Elena bring Stephan coffee in a glass? Was it even hot? Did Elena think instant coffee works like cool aid? Well Stephan took a microscopic sip and seconds later shattered the glass so you can just assume.

Also what's with Elena rubbing stuff at Stephan's face? Remember that episode she spent trying to make him remember how they fell in love just to tell him she was now with her brother? And now she just HAD to tell him she was having the time of her life on his brother's crotch and won the lottery while he was fucking drowning. WTF Elena?

Other than that this was the best episode of the season... FINALLY it feels like things are moving on.

And I don't mind Price's rant about glorified suicide 'cause lately TVD kind of has been sending that vibe of "only peace in death". Makes you want to off yourself on Thursdays when you think of all the shit you should be doing.

To be fair missing the bus to work, breaking up with your girl/boyfriend, failing a big exam is just so slightly less inconvenient than being stuck in a box for 2000 years unable to move but feeling every supernatural death like a non-physical knife piercing your body. Context, it matters.

I agree about the shit Elena did, that was bad taste. It feels like sometimes she cares more about herself than her friends (just like Stefan) because their high empathy, when people close to them hurts they are physically hurt themselves.

I couldn't even comprehend the point of that conversation over all of Elena's "ME, ME, ME, I, I, I, MY amazing summer boning your brother" nonsense. Weren't they discussing Stefan's pain and torment of drowning repeatedly? Wasn't she trying to tell him revenge was not the answer? I was with it when she said related it to her fight with Katherine and how Stefan tried to stop her, but after that?....Was her stupid speech meant to comfort and deter him from turning it off? If so, epic fail, Elena. EPIC FAIL!

It's worrying how Katherine is dying but I think she'll think of something, I agree though that it would be fun if Caroline went full-on Caroline mode and forced her some help even though that's not exactly what Katherine deserves from Caroline's point of view. Preferably this will coincide with the Augustine vampire and hopefully some evolutionary change for vampires might happen. Think about it, Klaus to Scary Mary to Rose to Katherine to Damon to Elena and Caroline, that's 6 generations ofvampire line. Something should change now that Katherine is dying, Originals are gone and Silas/Qetsiyah/Amara (Tessa was a sucky name!) are dead.

I still hope there's more to the doppelgänger story arc though, maybe this could affect Stefan, Elena and Kathrine in some way?

I suppose one important story arc will be to change Bonnie as the anchor because I doubt she'll want to continue to be one hopefully leading up to a point near the end of season 5 it's actually become destroyed and they will have to deal with an arme of dead supernatural creatures coming back. :D

Granted it was too late and sucked for Stefan , and of course they are clowns , but they did try .

Hmm, as far a suicide goes, we all agree that getting to some imagined afterlife is not a reason to do it. But there are possible valid reasons. I didn't understand why Amara was so obsessed with dying until we saw that scene with Tessa passing through Bonnie. Escaping terrible, never-ending physical pain IS an acceptable reason to kill oneself, in my opinion. I finally thought her obsession with ending it all made sense in that moment. And Silas wanted to die to be with Amara. And Tessa wanted to die to be with Silas. So, yeah, those last situations are not situations that we want young viewers to emulate. . . on the other hand, we make high schoolers read Romeo and Juliet, which is pretty much the same thing. That's what it made me think of. I don't know, I guess I'm desensitized to "suicide for love", since it happens in film and literature all the time, but it didn't remind me of real-life suicide at all.

But she knew she would be rid of the anchor status , she was inolved in the ritual for it . And Silas knows she is human , and probably guessed what tessa was doing . Seems to me all they had to do was fight Tessa isntead of begging for life . The whole "we want to die" angle is forced and contrived all along . It made somewhat sense when Silas thought Amara was dead ... and even then his aloof demeanor and fun antics didnt seem to indicate life would suck that much for him . Bit she is back and human , the anchor was like the only sucky part left and already getting destroyed .

I thought of all this too, but at least when Amara was first wanting to die, she didn't know that the spell would happen. And I think she was just mentally exhausted from all those years of pain, as well. I don't know, I guess I just think that if you've lived for that long, you can make your own informed decision on living or dying. But yes, as a motivation for our villain, wanting to die has been a definite, unrelatable, snooze-fest.

yeah seems to me they could have lived a little , and most of all , together .. something they didnt have a chance to do yet . And repeating myself , when not repeating ad nauseum his dying wishes , Silas was pretty much having lots of fun , a far cry from the brooding type and life hungry but highly depressing usual stefan . And double the fun with powers ... hell as a wizard he became klaus 2.0 (without the charm and class of course) . it was a really weird plot and (sloppy) endgame , even if still a fun ride overall

Please don't take this the wrong way Price but I think u may have been reading too much into it when u said that the show was openly advocating suicide. Katharine is a gangster. Whilst the other two LET themselves be cut. She GRABBED the blade. Respect! "What's another 5 minutes?" I love Damon. <3 I m glad the whole Silas / Amara thing was wrapped up. It had gotten old. I hope the next big bad is more interesting. Although I did love Silas' whole 'down on love' thing at the bus stop. Did anyone else laugh out loud when the girl ran away? Nope? Just me?

I must say I liked it that silas wanted to die so he and amara could finally find peace together.
I mean nothing would get better for amara,it was a torture for her to live, why should she go on with it?
She lived long enough,i think at this point she had the right to finally give up.
I think there is an afterlife in tvd were the two of them will finally be happy together.
I just hate tessa, she should finally get over it

See that i dont get much . Silas is human again , and a frickin' wizard and most of all not trapped . i could buy life still sucking for him without his girl (yet it was clear he was having lots of fun while searching for the anchor) ... but with her back , alive and also human , what are they even complaining about and seeking death for ? So ok she still get a raw deal with everyghost passing through her as the anchor ... but even that was going to end five frickin' minute later . They both get to be human and free as long as they kick tessa's behind , but "noooooo they wanna die they lived too long" . I agree a bit with Price there as it makes no sense , spending eons in tombs should motivate you to be carefree for at least a few years , and if life still sucks , then by all mean go ahead and die far away from mystic falls

Totally a great episode, but Damon's line "You want dopplegangers? I have dopplegangers coming out of my *ears*!" pretty much summons up TVD these days. This show needs to dial back the doppelganger arcs and focus on the more basic vampire stuff.

Doppelganger and the "end of the world" definitely bought it down. It was just too much considering they were out matched the entire time. If it wasn't for Stefan, the gang would literally have no part in the bad guys' demises. That is not good storytelling. It makes the heroes useless. I much prefer TVD when it's about the monster of the week/typical vampire(supernatural) business.

I think was stupid to kill off Silas,Tessa & Amara along with have Nadia leaving all in one episode.Seriously because we loved the characters(although Amara was barely part of the show, but was fun to watch when she acted crazy).Plus Nadia leaving was a bad idea since it'd be good for Katherine to know her daughter that was taken away from her after giving birth to her.The only thing that was good about this episode was Bonnie being brought back from the dead

Peeps need to remember that this is THE INTERNET and this TELEVISION RECAP has blog like tendencies. There are going to be opinions whether or not you want to read them. There's no reason to take them personally. New opinions open up new debates, don't make it like a personal attack and argue your emotions instead of your logic. I may not personally agree with everything I read on Price's recaps but he raises a valid point about glorified suicide. It is not a release, and family and friends left behind feel helpless and worthless because they couldn't help or didn't see the signs. It is a terrible hopeless feeling and I applaud Price for using a popular youth-centric blog/funny photo recap to point out the problems with these shows.

ANYWAYS. HOW MUCH SEX IS JER AND BONBON GOING TO DO. Like sooo much, that lucky witch. And if Katherine dies and we're stuck with Elena as the ONLY doppelganger I'll gouge my eyeballs out. And if there's no Klaroline anymore, I'll ship Carothine (Fortrova?). KATHERINE AND CAROLINE SHENANIGANS FOREVER.

It annoys me so much when people say there is no afterlife... well not really everyone is entitled to their own beliefs... I guess what annoys me is the level of arrogance they possess when they say it.

Right... there is no afterlife cause its just something our weak minds came up with cause we can fathom the alternative EVEN THOUGH by saying that statement you yourself are fathoming that alternative right this second

So by implying that you and others that share your opinion are just more advanced then the rest of the world I don't see how you are any less annoying than the Bible thumper yelling on the street corner that everyone is going to hell

I agree with Price on the existence of the afterlife, and even on the reason man invented religion, but reading the review even made me feel uncomfortable because I know lots of lovely intelligent people who don't agree with me. If this were a website devoted to moral/religious topics, I wouldn't blink at what was said, but it's not, and we're all here to have a nice time talking about tv. It's fine to come out firmly against encouraging suicide in young people, but the rest just seemed to take a little bit of unity from our community made up of people of all different beliefs. . . except our belief that their are really, really good-looking people and ridiculous plots to be found on TVD.

And another thing, you clearly did not get the Katherine/Caroline scene. That scene did not set back what happened last episode, it actually would help push them closer. If Caroline/Katherine were to ever even stop disliking each other, they would have to address what happened and not sweep under the rug. And frankly, I'm happy it was stated that Katherine is responsible for Caroline's death because I was sick of certain idiots blaming Bonnie.

19

Who blames Bonnie for the actual death? It was her behavior AFTER Caroline became a vampire that was . Especially when SHE was the one who told Damon to even give Caroline vampire blood. Turning is always a possibility once it's in your system so it wasn't Caroline's fault.

Has anyone addressed the obvious conflict of Nadia being a vamp and yet the Petrova line continues? Are we just to assume Nadia had a kid and in turn abandoned it to be a vamp just like Katherine? Makes no sense!

4

the doppleganger bloodline issue goes back farther than that. At what point after being turned into an anchor did Amara pop out a kid? And did Silas have a child with someone else (since we know he thought amara was dead)? And are we short a Silas doppleganger because Stefan never reproduced? Are all the dopplegangers over now that both Stefan and Elena are undead?

my fear is that the writers will conveniently rewrite doppleganger lore to make it so that these mystical creatures are so magical that they are not even actually related by blood. They just pop up every 500 years or so. In which case, WTF ISOBEL and the entire Elena is adopted storyline!?!?!

So, now that I have given this episode some thoughts, I feel slightly disappointed:
First, i didn't like the story's retconing by making it about Silas and Amara. But since Silas and Tessa were so wonderfully crazy, I went with the flow, having fun, even if Klaus' storyline now felt kinda weird and all of season 4 and the hunters etc.
AND ALL OF THIS CAME TO AN END IN JUST 7 EPISODES? Why, TVD? Why make such a retcon if it wasn't going to last for another two seasons? I'm really sad about this turn of events.
Also because I liked Tessa very much, she was really fresh for me, just what I needed in the show, a witchy character with personality, unlike Bonnie.

And.... what about the Travelers? Matt? That dagger thingy?

Really interested about Katherine's storyline though.

QUESTIONS:
... Who will you miss most: Silas, Tessa, or Amara?
As I sad before, I will miss Tessa like crazy. I'll miss Silas too, it was so much more interesting than all of Stefan's versions. I'm sad about Amara's quick passing... if they needed to add a doppelganger, at least they could characterizer her a bit. Since it's been all about her for a while...

... Is it the end of the road for Caroline and Katherine's detective agency?
God I hope not... those are amazing together! And I wanna Katherine living some of her human, college life!

... Does Bonnie deserve a spa day?
Bonnie just needed to move on. Also, this gives me the opportunity to say that I loved how TVD deal with the "releasing suicide", it was so interesting for a villain to have such a deside for once. Instead of good characters always wanting to come back to life. Tessa was so right in the end, altering one's life span is what caused this mess. Bonnie should have learned it by now...

... Should Stefan set up an OKcupid profile?
I don't care about Stefan anymore, now that he got his memory back..

I'm glad the Silas/Tessa storyline is over, but they did get to deliver some great lines.
And Nina Dobrev was amazing in this episode. It's so impressive the way you immediately know which of the dopplegangers she's playing, to the point that I sometimes forget that they're played by the same person.
Can't say the same for Silas/Stefan though.

Elena was the worst this episode - that speech in the woods, it made me want to slap her face really hard. "I need you to get over all the horrible trauma and be 'fixed' so that I don't have to waste my precious energy on feeling guilty (and so that you'll go back to thinking I am perfect and worship the ground I walk on)" Both brothers should just dump her.

Katherine's outfit was amazing - I'm a girl, but every time she was on screen I couldn't help noticing what a fantastic body she has - just gorgeous.

Was I the only one that got a deep sense of catharsis, when Bonnie found out she was in for untold pain with the newly dead passing through her? Never has the phrase rest in peace given me such a buzz!
And no wonder miss batshit was cray cray. Two thousand years of stone, the dead passing through you (I'm sure there's a German site that provides this - rhymes!) and then them bitching ad nauseam. Sheesh.

I didn't get the whole Amara plan of still spending eternity with Silas, as if it would be roses again. That's one deluded b/witch.

It must be sad to be you and live a life without any hope. You absolute conviction in nothingness after death must mean you live your life without belief in consequences or the deep abiding love of God. Suicide is also a result of hopelessness. The belief that when you end your life, your suffering is over. You're right, though, VD and the CW or most networks seem to care little about the messages they send today's youth. Then they act surprised when a messed up kid goes on a rampage with a gun or two.

Really ? At least part of those rampages , well the terro/jihadist kind , seems to be actually motivated by the notion that there is an after anyway . Most atheist would logically actually think it's better to live life to the fullest , without fear or hope for the other side .

I feel bad for Ian Somerhalder. He used to get all the snarks and bad boy smile. There is a reason he got Damon and Paul Wesley got to be Stefan. You cannot exchange characters whenever you want to. Damon playing Stefan feels so forced that my ears hurts at times.

Julie Plec and her fangirl feelings for Ian Somerhalder , have reduced Damon to a whipped character. If Elena says yes it is yes, if she says no, then no. I remember people accusing Stefan of being a bad boyfriend for letting Elena make her own choices, but the current situation is beyond ridiculous. Atleast back then Elena had morale and compassion. Now she is a Damon II. This Elena deserves this Damon. They had to create a doppleganger of human Elena to make Delena work. I was cringing the way she hugged Stefan in the morning. Girl, you just slept with his brother and now you are in your ex's room. I am loving Stefan's oblivious expressions where he clearly indicates that he doesn't care.

Whaaat? I thought that was what separated Stefan from Damon. Stefan would allow others to have their free will because he thought they deserved it but was ready to accept the consequences and Damon the other way around.

I have to say this episode was really fun, but as usual... Too much dumb.

First, I'm glad someone finally considered asking Tessa to bring Bonnie back. I still can't possibly beleive that this suggestion wasn't brought up last week.

Second, why is Tessa so glad to toss it in Bonnie's face that she's going to be miserable all her life? Isn't she Tessa's great great great grandchild?
And isn't she the only reason Tessa has a chacne for this revenge?

Oh well... The dumbest part that I don't get here, is that Bonnie isn't imortal. So... Doesn't that mean that some day the entire other side goes poof?
Yeah, probably not, since obviously this plot line is going to go poof by the end of the season.

Also didn't a major previous plot point was that a person can't be a witch and something supernatural? That's why they vamped Abby?
So Bonnie can be a witch and the anchor?

Either way, I'm sort of glad the Silas storyline is over. It was just so stupidly dumb how he was the biggest threat ever (more than Klaus) and now he barely means anything to anyone.

Goodbye and good riddance.

Though I have a feeling the Augustine Vampire storyline is going to be even dumber.
