Ok I first want to admit that I'm biased to media concerning Vampires/Lycans. That fact aside, I don't blindly latch onto anything Vampire related. Case in point, I wasn't that big a fan of Buffy (Loved the original Movie) or Angel, mainly because of the production value put into the make-up artistry and the B-movie plot lines.
When I heard of this show, I too, couldn't help but compare it to Twilight. I have to admit, I'm tired of the hundred + yrs old vampire chasing after the teenage high school girl (pedophile anyone? lol). I find this plotline to be cheap and played out and looking to capitalize on that younger demographic. Hopefully the drama the writers create will allow it to rise above meaningless fluff. I actually kind of like the potential this show has thus far. Although, I do also feel that being on "CW" may limit the true growing power this show can have, but time will tell.
I do have some gripes so far, the setting of the show is in Virginia and being a resident of Hampton Roads Va and frequent traveler throughout the state, Im not convinced that the show is actually filmed in the state. The actors/actresses all tend to have a more "West Coast" vibe and I have yet to see a Va Plate on any cars. The woods-y envirnoment gives it a VA look but Im still not conviced they aren't just filming in some Northern California town. I know people reading this are like who care right? Well I do, and imagine if they tried to film the excellent True Blood show on a Hollywood set instead of in Louisiana. Where they film, does lend to the shows creditibility. I don't feel truely contected to the show on this count.
Another problem is that while the actors/actresses are all good looking, some are rather lacking in actual substance. I haven't read the books yet, but if this show isn't going to stick to similar plotlines as the book I do see this as a huge negative. There's nothing worse than screwing over an authors work, in this regard. True Blood and Dexter also catches my ire on this point. I love reading books and while I can understand devations from time to time, encompassing the original work should be a requirement when the written word is transplanted on screen. I mean the fans of the book is what allowed the show to come into existence in the first place right?
On the plus side, I do approve of the production value being put into the show again regarding make-up artistry. Making Vampires look realistic is important to me. Never was too big a fan of Daywalker vampires but after I saw the horror fest movie a few yrs back called "The Hamiltons" I am ok with vampires not being affected by daylight in the traditional sense. So to close I'm more than willing to continue to give this show a shot, and will be downloading weekly from the newgroups (sorry dont watch broadcast tv, I despise commercials). If nothing else, this show will hold me over until a new season of True Blood arrives. Any other potential vampire show creators please rip off quality content like True Blood and not Twilight like The Vampire Diaries does.
P.S. I too was a fan of Moonlight, and Masquerade.
