Season 5 has the making's of the best of TVD ;)
  • Silas is bad, very bad, and I like him already!

Great start to the new season! Vervain drinking Uni roomie gets vamped to death, but who killed her and did she know her water was laced with vervain, - more importantly, did the vamp who bit her know that? I guess they do now! Jeremy's still seeing dead people, namely Bonnie and he nearly joined her if it wasn't for acting big bro Damon saving him yet again. Got to feel sorry for human Katherine, there's a long line of people wanting her dead with Silas right at the front, and if that wasn't bad enough, she's having a bad hair day and drank at least a gallon of soapy bath water. Tyler avoids Caroline yet again - It's time she called Klaus to tell him it's OK to kill Tyler after all. Silas is bad, very bad, and I like him already! This guy loves an audience and for his first trick he performs a good old knife and throat trick on Bonnie's dad in front of the town. The town and Bonnie were less than impressed, he really needs to work on his performance skills a little more. His impersonation skills are a little shaky too, he's not even trying very hard to act boring. Meanwhile, Stefan is still doing his best 'Angel' impression at the bottom of a lake and no one has actually missed him.moreless
  • Hmm good start

I remember giving this series no more than a rating throughout the entire season 4.... cause lets face it, it was a dumb season... 22 episodes of finding a damn cure and the crunching boredom of rebekkah`s desire to become human... Damn season 4 dragged!!

This episode seems to be a good start and with stephan gone bad ass... well it is always a good thing. :)

No one does bad ass on this series better than stephan..

I jus hope they dont get too much of love and relationships this season...

We want it to be dark and its started that way. hope it carries on.moreless

Not long into the fifth season premiere for The Vampire Diaries, I started wondering if someone had tossed various season premieres from the Buffyverse into a blender as inspiration. Not that this is necessarily a bad idea, but Elena's college years began in some rather familiar ways. I suppose there are only so many variations on a theme that one can invoke.

The episode gets off to a steamy start between the gymnastics of Elena/Damon and Matt/Rebekah/Nadia, but there are already signs of impending weirdness. Despite getting killed off, Bonnie is still part of the equation, which makes me wonder if being dead will make her any more interesting or relevant. And Katherine is on the run from the many enemies that she made while being a vampire. Oh, and Stefan is doing his best Angel impression, locked in a safe in the ocean, drowning over and over again.

Rather than take its time with introducing the new status quo, The Vampire Diaries ramps up the plot acceleration by having Silas tip his hand to just about everyone and then launch his search and eviscerate mission against Katherine on a community scale. Silas is not one to mince words, despite loving to hear himself talk, and that means killing Bonnie's father and threatening to kill Caroline's mother, all with a relatively casual attitude about the whole thing. It sets a standard that may be difficult to maintain.

It's a solid start to the season, and with the main characters blissfully out of the high school years, maybe the show can wear its more adult trappings a little more comfortably. With the exception of Jeremy, the show is about the adventures of young adults (or apparent equivalents). And unlike Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which struggled to figure out how to maintain its "high school as horror movie" theme after graduation, The Vampire Diaries has more freedom to branch out and explore new options.moreless
