The front door of Elena's house has a window in it only in this episode because filming of the series moved out of Vancouver after the pilot.
-The pilot was shot in Vancouver as New Moon, the second film in the Twilight Saga, was also being filmed in the city.
-Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore) revealed in interviews that his naturally pointy cuspids went unnoticed until he arrived on set for the pilot shoot in Vancouver.
-According to Paul, he was cast less than two weeks before shooting began in Vancouver. Upon winning the role, he went immediately to a book store and bought and read the series.
-Nina Dobrev (Elena Gilbert) said the showrunners gave the entire cast journals to chronicle their experience during the Vancouver shoot.
-Director Marcos Siega asked his Twitter followers for music suggestions during editing.
-In screener copies of the pilot, "Panic Switch" by Silversun Pickups is used in the opening scene, but the show was unable to get clearance for air. "Sort Of" by Silversun Pickups was used instead.
-935 is the house number of Elena, Jeremy and Aunt Jenna's home.
Stefan: I wanted to apologize for my disappearing act earlier. I know it was strange.
Elena: No worries. I get it. Blood makes you squeamish.
Stefan: Uh, something like that.
Elena: (referring to Matt) He hates me.
Bonnie: That's not hate, that's "you dumped me but I'm too cool to show it but secretly I'm listening to Air Supply's greatest hits."
Stefan: I shouldn't have come home, I know the risk. But I have to know her.
Caroline: His name is Stefan Salvatore, he's a Gemini and his favorite color is blue.
Bonnie: You got all that in one day?
Caroline: Please. I got all that between third and fourth period.
Stefan: Stay away from Elena.
Damon: I take that as an invitation.
Stefan: Why are you here now?
Damon: I could ask you the same question. However, I'm fairly certain your answer could be summed up all into one little word: Elena.
Elena (voiceover): Dear Diary: I couldn't have been more wrong. I thought that I could smile and nod my way through it. Pretend like it would all be OK.
Stefan (voiceover) I had a plan. I wanted to change who I was. Bring a life to someone new. Someone without the past.
Elena (voiceover): Without the pain.
Elena and Stefan (voiceover): Someone alive.
Elena (voiceover): But it's not that easy, the bad things stay with you.
Stefan (voiceover): They follow you. You can't escape them, as much as you want to.
Elena (voiceover): All you can do is be ready for the good, so when it comes, you're invited in, because you need it. I need it.
Elena: People are going to stop giving you breaks Jeremy, they just don't care any more. They don't remember that our parents are dead, they have their own lives to deal with. The rest of the world has moved on. You should try to.
Jeremy: I've seen you in the cemetery writing in your diary, is that, is that supposed to be you moving on?
Elena: Mom and Dad wouldn't have wanted this.
Stefan: I know it's late, but I needed to know if you're okay.
Elena: You know, for months, that's all everyone's wondered about me, if I'll be OK.
Stefan: What do you tell them?
Elena: That I'll be fine.
Stefan: Do you ever mean it?
Elena: Ask me tomorrow. (Stefan stares at her) It's warmer in the house, we can talk. Would you like to come in?
Stefan: (smiles) Yes.
Stefan: Damon, please, after all these years can't we just please give it a rest?
Damon: I promised you an eternity of misery. I'm just keeping my word.
Stefan: Just stay away from Elena.
Bonnie: Elena, there's no way I'm psychic, I know that. But whatever I saw or think I saw... I have this feeling.
Elena: Bonnie, what?
Bonnie: That's just the beginning.
Zach: You promised (shows him the newspaper with the news of the attack)
Stefan: This was an animal attack.
Zach: Don't give me that, I know the game, you turned them up enough and they always suspect an animal attack, you said you had it under control.
Stefan: And I do.
Zach: Please Uncle Stefan. Mystic Falls is a different place now, it's been quiet for years but there are people who still remember and you being here its just going to stir things up.
Stefan: It's not my intention.
Zach: Then what is? Why did you come back after all this time? Why now?
Stefan: I don't have to explain myself.
Zach: I know that you can't change who you are, but you don't belong here anymore.
Stefan: Where do I belong?
Zach: I can't tell you what to do. But coming back here was a mistake.
Stefan: You okay?
Elena (upset): Were you following me?
Stefan: No, I just-- I saw you fall.
Elena: Uh huh, and you happened to be hanging out at the cemetery.
Stephan: I'm visiting, I have a family here.
Elena (embarrassed): Oh... Wow... Tactless. I'm sorry, it's the fog, it's making me foggy and back there there was this bird, it was all very Hitchcock for a second, that was the bird movie, right? the Hitchcock... (pauses, smiles). I'm Elena.
Stefan: I'm Stefan.
Elena: I know, we have History together.
Stefan: And English and French.
Elena: Dear Diary: Today will be different. It has to be. I will smile and it will be believable. The smile will say 'I'm fine, thank you. Yes, I feel much better'. I will no longer be the sad little girl who lost her parents. I will start fresh. Be someone new. It's the only way I'll make it through.
Stefan: You won't be sad forever, Elena.
Stefan: Um, I thought you might want this back.
(hands Elena her diary)
Elena: I must've dropped it. Uh...thank you.
Stefan: Don't worry, I didn't...read it.
Elena: No? Why not? Most people would've.
Stefan: Well, I wouldn't want anyone to read mine.
Elena: You keep a journal.
Stefan: Yeah. If I don't write it down, I forget it. Memories are too important.
Stefan: For over a century, I have lived in secret. Hiding in the shadows, alone in the world. Until now. I am a vampire, and this is my story.
Elena: We were best friends since childhood, so we just had to try dating to see if we could make it work. ... But then my parents died.

Darren: He sounded like James Blunt.
Brooke: Well what's wrong with that?
Darren: We already have a James Blunt. One's all we need.

Tyler: Hey, Pete Wentz called, he wants his nail polish back.
Jeremy: Pete Wentz, huh? How old school TRL of you. Carson Daly fan?

Elena: (to Stefan) And then, back there, there was this...this, this bird, and it was all very Hitchcock for a second. That is the bird movie, right? Hitchcock?
