Goof: Matt writes his address on his job application as 529 Harrison, Mystic Falls, VA 30306. In "Lost Girls" (season 1, episode 6), his sister Vicki's driver's license listed her address as 749 Birch Street, Mystic Falls, VA 20185. In reality, the 20185 zip code is in Virginia, but 30306 is an Atlanta, GA zip code.
Elena: (after the music starts) Show me how it's done in the fifties.
Stefan: Uh...no.
Elena: Come on, one move?
Stefan: (does a dance move, and then kisses Elena suddenly) Now you remember that, because it's never going to happen again.
Elena: I looked at my birth certificate, it lists Miranda and Grayson Gilbert as my birth parents. None of it makes any sense.
Bonnie: Which is why you should ask Jenna. First of all, the Elena I know would always want the real truth, good or bad.
Elena: And second of all?
Bonnie: You just found out your boyfriend is a...vampire, so unless your birth parents are aliens, how bad could it be?
Jenna: (to Elena, referring to her adoption) You dad was about to leave the office one night when this girl showed up. She was sixteen, a runaway, and about to give birth. He delivered her baby and he gave her a place to stay, but a few days later she disappeared. And there you were.
Caroline: (referring to the vervain necklace) It's so pretty, thank you. God, and it will go with, like, everything. What's the occasion?
Elena: No occasion, just a little friend gift.
Caroline: Lesbian friend necklace? Cause we're freaky like that?
Bonnie: Don't rain on my hot guy parade.
Caroline: It's just a drizzle.
Elena: (To Stefan at the dance) You are so teaching me how to hand-jive.
Stefan: He posed as a pizza delivery boy last night.
Damon: Well, he gets points for that.
Anna: Hey, um...do, do you wanna do something later, maybe?
Jeremy: Oh, sorry, I'm stuck on punch duty at the school dance.
Anna: Oh. How'd you get stuck with that?
Jeremy: Well, I'm failing English, so I copped a plea.
Damon: I think we need a fresh start.
Bonnie: You tried to kill me.
Damon: But I didn't. And if I wanted to I would have. Does that not count for anything?
Bonnie: You know I can start fires with my mind. Fires kill vampires, right? Just stay the hell away from me!
Alaric: Oh, uh, Jeremy, the source that you cited for the 1860s info. Um, Jonathan Gilbert?
Jeremy: Oh, my ancestor's journal?
Alaric: I'd really like to see that sometime.
Jeremy: Really?
Alaric: First person account of the Civil War? That's like porn for a history teacher.
Jeremy: You think my essay is creative, wait until you get a hold of this thing.
Stefan: I'm talking about Atlanta.
Damon: Oh yeah. Elena and I had a blast!
Stefan: I get it, you're just bitter because one of us gets to be with the person we love and poor Katherine is just out of reach. Unless there's another way to get to the tomb. Is that what Bree said?
Damon: You're pathetic when your fishing.
Stefan: And you're transparent when you're deflecting.
Stefan: There's another vampire in town. Until we find out who it is, we need to be careful.
Alaric: (To Jenna) Can I get you a drink? I hear the punch is the real boss.
Bonnie: What's Damon doing here?
Elena: He wanted to come. I promise, he'll behave.
Caroline: So what, is this like a threesome now? You and the Salvatore brothers?
Elena: No, but if I'm gonna be with Stefan, then I have to learn to tolerate Damon. It's not like I can kill him.
Bonnie: There's a thought.
Caroline: Mmm. I'll help.
Stefan: I could help you.
Damon: You? Help me? Seems a little unnatural.

Elena: (to Stefan) Seriously, what was it like, the fifties? Cause in my mind I have this picture of somewhere between American Bandstand, Grease...it's all varsity sweaters and milkshakes.
American Bandstand was a top-40 music TV show that ran in various formats from 1952 to 1989. Dick Clark hosted the show beginning in 1957.
Grease was a 1978 musical movie with John Travolta that was set in 1959.
Just before Stefan gives Damon their father's journal, Damon is writing names on a notepad, which include Benjamin Lockwood, John Gilbert, and Honoria Fell.
Honoria Fell is a character from the 1991 novel The Fury, the third book in The Vampire Diaries series of novels by L.J. Smith on which the TV series is based.
