    Dervla Kirwan was born as the youngest of three daughters in Ireland. Her mother was a teacher and her father worked for an insurance company. She started her career in 1987 at the age of 15 with her first role, in the BBC Drama Troubles. She moved on with playing theatre at the Bush Theatre in London. She played along in several theatre plays until 1993. In this time she also made a few films, but her big breakthrough came in 1996 when she appeared in the tv series Ballykissangel. While filming, she met Stephen Tompkinson and they fell in love with and got engaged, but they broke up in 1999. For her role in Ballykissangel she won several awards. She moved on with several roles on TV series and in movies. From 1999 on she dated Darren Boyd until they broke up in 2001. After their break up she worked even harder on her career until she met Rupert Penry-Jones in 2004. They are still a couple and Dervla gave birth to their daughter Florence in 2004. She was pregnant and was giving birth during the filming of the BBC Drama 55 Degrees North and her role had to be adjusted because of it.moreless

She married Angus Forbes, an Australian banker, in 1997, and they have two daughters, Phoebe (born 2001) and Zoe (2004).
