The Virginian

Season 4 Episode 1

The Brothers

Aired Wednesday 7:30 PM Sep 15, 1965 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • The opening credits have been changed. There is no longer a letter V flashing across the screen. Also, there are no longer clips of the actors from various episodes. Diane Roter has now been added, sharing screen credit with Randy Boone.

  • Quotes

    • Matt Denning: (talking about his son's comprehension of his fruitless situation) I still don't think he understands.
Ellen Denning: Maybe he's too young to live without hope.

  • Notes

    • It is not clear whether Matt is being sent to prison for execution or for a lengthy stay as the exact sentence given by the Judge is not revealed. In other episodes, such as "Long Ride to Wind River" (season 4, episode #18), prisoners were sent to the Territorial Prison for execution, not just for incarceration. Even less clear is whether he was convicted of murder or manslaughter -- we are not given that either.

    • Of the regulars, only The Virginian, Trampas and Emmett Ryker appear in this episode with the last named being the featured player.

    • This episode marked the second series appearances of Robert Lansing, Andrew Prine and Kurt Russell. Lansing appeared earlier in the Season 2 (#11) episode "The Fatal Journey", Prine in the Season 3 episode (#18) "Hideout" and Russell was in the Season 3 (#8) episode: "A Father for Toby." Andrew Prine would return for yet another guest appearance, this time as Randy Benton's older brother, in the later Season 4 episode (#29): "A Bald-Faced Boy."
