AIRED:
Local ranchers are upset with the lumbering of Charles Daniels (Arch Johnson) which they believe will destroy a valuable watershed area and ruin grazing land. Daniels refuses to listen to their entreaties as delivered by the Virginian and Emmett Ryker has to try and keep the peace despite the growing tension. Complicating matters is a budding relationship between Daniels' daughter Katie (Joan Freeman) and the son of one of the local ranchers opposed to the logging, Dave Ferguson (Martin Milner). This relationship is frowned upon not only by Daniels but also by Daniels' foreman, Paul Rogers (William Smith). When Rogers is killed accidentally by Ferguson, Daniels believes it murder and seeks revenge.moreless

    • NOTES (3)

      • This episode reunited William Bramley (William Ferguson) and Arch Johnson (Charles Daniels), who had worked together in the original Broadway production of "West Side Story." Bramley played Officer Krupke (repeating the role in the movie) while Johnson played Lt. Schrank (being replaced by Simon Oakland in the movie).

      • The plot of this episode has many parallels with the last episode (#30) of Season 1, The Final Hour, including tension between locals and outsiders who are there to exploit local resources, a female outsider who has a romantic interest in a local much to the chagrin of a long-time male companion, and the accidental killing of one of the two competing men by the other (although in this case it is the outsider rather than the local who is killed).

      • Judge Garth does not appear in this episode and the appearances of Betsy, Randy and Trampas are very brief and consist solely of reused footage from the dance sequence in the earlier Season 3 episode (#2): Dark Challenge. This includes Randy and Betsy singing "Wait for the Wagon," parts of which were used in the opening credit sequence in all Season 3 episodes.
