Episode Summary

Sheriff's deputy Rick Grimes wakes up in the hospital after having been shot while on duty and discovers that while he was in the hospital, something has happened which causes the bodies of the dead to reanimate and attack the living. The town he lived in is mostly abandoned, with many dead roaming the streets at night. Believing that his wife, Lori, and son, Carl, have most likely fled to safety in nearby Atlanta, he grabs a stock of weapons from the locker of his police station, and sets out to find them.moreless

  • The Walking Dead

I am really glad that I started watching the Walking Dead because this first episode was a brilliant start to the series The main character is Rick Grimes who is a sheriff and one minute he is on the job and when he wakes up from being shot the world as he knew it has gone and zombies are everywhere The episode just got better as we learned about what is actually going on and the end showed the zombie attack is worse that Rick could imagine.moreless
  • helpppppppppppppp !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

why cant i watch it it wont play for me ????

  • Bandwagoneer

Gripping from the get-go, but petered out around the middle and end of the episode. By the end, the only names I know are Dwane, Carl and Lori, none of which have considerable screentime. For a first episode, you typically want your audience to bond with your main character, and I had to look up Rick's name, which is a huge detriment for me. Overall, I enjoyed the episode, but right now, it's just another zombie bandwagoneer. It needs to start sticking out, fast, if I'm to keep watching it.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • The walker that Rick encounters in the tank at the end of the episode was played by Sam Witwer. The original intention was to have a web based spinoff showing how Atlanta fell and how Witwer's character died in the tank. This never materialized since Frank Darabont was let go from the show.

    • GOOF:
Rick tells the deputy that he hopes his sidearm is loaded and the safety is off. The deputy then racks the slide, loading a round in the chamber and flips his thumb and a click is heard as he flips off the safety. Two problems: Police officers always go out in the field with their sidearm loaded and the gun was a Glock, there is no external safety on the Glock. Also, spike strips do not work as shown. They leave hollow tubes in the car's tires that deflate them slowly so that the car slows and becomes more difficult to maneuver.

    • Carl is wearing a 'Science Dog' T-Shirt. A comic book character created by 'Walking Dead' creator Robert Kirkman.

  • QUOTES (4)

    • Dwayne: Daddy can I learn to shoot? I'm old enough.
Morgan: Hell yes you're gonna learn. We gotta do it carefully, teach you to respect the weapon.
Rick: That's right. It's not a toy. You pull the trigger, you have to mean it. Always remember that, Dwayne.

    • Rick: (to Shane) That vase - that's something special. 'Fess up. You steal that from your Grandma Jean's house? I hope you left her that spoon collection.

    • Rick: (to the legless walker) I'm sorry this happened to you.

    • Unknown Speaker: Hey you! Dumb***. Yeah, you in the tank. You cozy in there?

  • NOTES (8)

    • No animatronics were used to create the "Legless Walker". It took a three hour process of adding prosthetics, makeup and CGI blue screenpieces to actress Melissa Cowan to achieve the desired look.

    • The "Legless Walker" that Rick encounters is given a back story via Webisodes on the AMC website. Her name was Hannah and was trying to get her children to a safe spot when she got killed and torn in half by walkers.

    • The character of Duane Jones is paying homage to the actor, Duane Jones, who starred as Ben in the original Night of the Living Dead.

    • When Rick leaves the hospital he passes an abandoned air cavalry helicopter. The logo on the front is the crossed swords with the number 7 in the middle, which would make it the 7th Air Cavalry unit. The Seventh Cavalry was George A. Custer's unit that was massacred at the Little Big Horn, and that numbered unit was retired from service.
