Is Suicide a viable option in the Walking Dead world?

Is suicide a viable option within the show?

Within philosophy there is the concept of "The Absurd"...basically put it's the concept that life itself has no purpose. It's more complex than that but for the sake of this let's keep it simple. The Philosopher Albert Camus came to the conclusion that yes...life itself has no meaning beyond the struggle itself and that was enough not to justify suicide.

But within the world of The Walking Dead, is the struggle of life enough to justify living? Or is it morally justifiable to commit suicide?

The other problem being you'll have to kill yourself the right way (head shot) or your body will come back as well. We saw the guy who hang himself and came back as the walking dead.

Despair would have to be very high in this reality. Life without hope means the struggle has no purpose. Obviously there is still some hope with the characters in the show, for Rick it's his kid but take that away would he have the willpower to go on? The characters last best when they have someone to live for or to protect, lose that and they start falling apart.

In the Walking Dead world you still need something, some destination or some person to protect. If you were by yourself and thought there was no hope or no one left to find how would you go on?

As much as I love the post apocalypse genre I would be amongst the first to die sadly.

It's definitely a tough call. I can understand why some people would opt out. Losing your entire family, and then forced to live in a world with little food, dangerous humans, and zombies is not easy.

However, if you get with the right group, you have a purpose. In addition, I think the reason that these characters have lived for so long is because they've made it as far as they did. I think that living so long would make you want to keep going to prove to yourself that you can do it. There hasn't been a suicide on Walking Dead in a long while. I think that shows that a lot of people would try to live and survive.
