Episode Summary

Due to his gun toting arrival in Atlanta, Rick causes a group of survivors to be trapped by walkers. The group dynamic devolves from accusations to violence, as Rick must confront an enemy that is far more dangerous than the walkers themselves.

This was a very good early episode into the season When Rick finds the worst possible place to be is the city he realises he is trapped and his attempt to get out doesn't go down well with a group of stranded when the gun fire gets them trapped This episode is about Rick helping the group to get out the city before the walkers get to them I really enjoyed the episode but things are going to be complicated if Rick is reunited with his wife.moreless

Holy characters. So many characters. And most of them don't have names yet. If you want your audience to be connected and invested in the characters, they need to stand out. From this episode, only Glenn really stood out. And we can check off the "act like zombies" escape plan (should totally play WD bingo). Still feeling like another zombie series so far, and Glenn driving off (with the car still alarming) was a very weak closing. I mean, I guess it sets up a bit more of his character (who's the dumbass now), but it wasn't in the tone the rest of the episode carried.moreless

Oh man, I cringed for the poor horse especially since I thought using a horse for transport was a brilliant idea when you can run out of gas so I wasn't expecting that. I did like how the show framed that coming in without knowing what situation you'll run into was freaking stupid.

The Good:

-"You just rang the dinner bell."

-Shane and Lori start a sexual relationship, which could be the start of a tense triangle if Rick is reunited with his wife.

-The exchange between Rick and Andrea in the store is revealing. She hesitates to take a mermaid necklace for her sister because she's afraid it's looting. Rick admits that he's not sure if those rules apply anymore. This is a thought-provoking way to show how the laws of society are changing, and fast.

-Rick is able to show off his intelligence and the knowledge that served him while he was a deputy.

The Bad:

-Though the episode starts at the camp, most of "Guts" focuses on Rick and his new posse. It would be nice if there was a greater balance between the two groups.moreless

- Goof - When Rick is backing up the Truck at the construction site he turns his body backwards in order to see where he's backing up the truck, but the camera immediately cuts to the back of the truck showing that the tail gate is down, meaning Rick was looking at an empty truck body. It could be argued that the truck has the body cut out to access the back of the truck from the cabin, but the tailgate was down so it makes no difference. Also, the truck's body is separate from the cab when looking at it from the outside, but when Rick picks up the survivors at the mall he walks straight into the cab from the body of the truck as if it where a single piece.
