The door to the outside that Chase comes in is left wide open. That's how the three Walkers following him got in. But the doorway was never shut or secured by anyone afterwards.
The walker that Rick encounters in the tank at the end of the episode was played by Sam Witwer. The original intention was to have a web based spinoff showing how Atlanta fell and how Witwer's character died in the tank. This never materialized since Frank Darabont was let go from the show.
GOOF:
Rick tells the deputy that he hopes his sidearm is loaded and the safety is off. The deputy then racks the slide, loading a round in the chamber and flips his thumb and a click is heard as he flips off the safety. Two problems: Police officers always go out in the field with their sidearm loaded and the gun was a Glock, there is no external safety on the Glock. Also, spike strips do not work as shown. They leave hollow tubes in the car's tires that deflate them slowly so that the car slows and becomes more difficult to maneuver.
Carl is wearing a 'Science Dog' T-Shirt. A comic book character created by 'Walking Dead' creator Robert Kirkman.
Goof - When Rick is backing up the Truck at the construction site he turns his body backwards in order to see where he's backing up the truck, but the camera immediately cuts to the back of the truck showing that the tail gate is down, meaning Rick was looking at an empty truck body. It could be argued that the truck has the body cut out to access the back of the truck from the cabin, but the tailgate was down so it makes no difference. Also, the truck's body is separate from the cab when looking at it from the outside, but when Rick picks up the survivors at the mall he walks straight into the cab from the body of the truck as if it where a single piece.
Goof: Despite Rick's warning not to get blood on their skin or eyes, a patch of blood can be found on Rick's hand when he removes the gloves.
The Walker that is eating the deer Daryl was tracking was played by Greg Nicotero, the show's Co-Executive Producer and Special Effects Make-Up Designer .
Daryl's weapon of choice is the Horton Scout HD 125 Crossbow. He will use this weapon throughout season one and two.
One of the vehicles at the survivor's camp is a van from the Holy Cross Luthern Chruch. The closest church by that name to the survivors is in Athens, Georgia.
The Walker that bites and kills Amy is played by co-executive producer and special effects makeup designer Greg Nicotero.
This is the second AMC show to feature a Winnebago. The model that appears in this episode is from the late 1970s. AMC's Breaking Bad features a larger but later model, built in the 1980s. However, the use of the vehicle ended in the third season when it was crushed at a junkyard.
It is established in this episode that it's been six and a half months since the zombie outbreak began.
The word "zombie" was never used in the entire season. Names such as "walkers" and "geeks", and in the case of the CDC, "test subject" was used, instead.
The corpse that Daryl finds in the tent has a button on its chest that reads, No Excuse For Domestic Violence.
The water that Shane discovers in bottles is from the Lipsey Mountain Spring Water company. They deliver water in the Atlanta region.
T-Dog's real name is revealed to be "Theodore Douglas."
If you look at the banners behind Shane and Otis in the gym, you will see that the school they are at has the initials C.H.S. and has a Cougar as a mascot. In reality, the school used for these scenes is Newnan High School (NHS) that does have the Cougar as their mascot.
Goof (though possible explanation): The suicide that ended up as a Walker had its legs eaten at by other zombies. It's made clear in the series that the zombies only eat the living and not the dead. He had time to produce a noose, get up a tree and jump so there shouldn't have been any Walkers nearby while he died.
It's possible the camper was chased up the tree by walkers or walkers caught up to him by the time he was ready to hang himself, so once he jumped the walkers would've started eating away at him, and likely stopped when the body lost the scent that attracts walkers - body heat/etc - likely why he wasn't pulled down - by the time his legs where eaten the body finally read/smelled dead to the walkers and they abandoned it.
The Cherokee Rose primary time to bloom is in the early spring with bright green leaves. However, the flower is capable of blossoming in the fall under good conditions. Given the condition of the plant Daryl finds, the timeframe of the show is set in the fall.
As Daryl hallucinates talking to his brother, the dirt on Daryl's face changes position from shot to shot.
