Another entertaining hour with most characters getting some action. The main plot sees Esther lose her hearing a few days ahead of her 68th birthday. Understandably, she begins to worry about getting old, but it turns out she merely has an ear infection. Phew!

Grandma-related episodes always score well on here and this one is no exception. Once again, Ellen gives a heartfelt performance as Esther, cranking up the crabbiness in public but at the same time showing her character's sadness and fear. Top marks! Her birthday turns out much better than planned, and Erin's dreadful knitting provides some light relief, both for the characters and the audience.

Mary Ellen, meanwhile, gets hormonal over a man and decides she isn't a girl any more. This is a rerun of 'The Minstrel', albeit with a lot less action for the guest actor, who appears once at the beginning of the episode and is never seen again. Still, it does mean we get to see more of the adorable GW Haynes. To modern eyes, Mary Ellen's encounter with the stranger looks so wrong. He spots her bathing, walks over and starts kissing her even though it's obvious she's a schoolgirl. Ah, the seventies!

And GW presenting John-boy with a bunch of flowers. The fun I could have had with that ending...moreless

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • The closing narration has John-Boy mentioning Mary Ellen is married to a college professor. In truth, she married a doctor and a veterinarian through the course of the series and reunion movies.

Correction - Mary Ellen's 2nd husband Jonesy,  was a professor at Boatwright University :)

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Opening Narration: Many times when I have tripped across those events in one's life called milestones, I have thought about how they so often catch us unawares. There was, for instance, that unforgettable spring many years ago when in the same week Grandma had to face growing old, Mary Ellen had to face the feelings of a woman.

    • Closing Narration: Mary Ellen's new found maturity was with her one day then gone the next; in time it was to come to stay. Today she lives in Richmond, Virginia, the wife of a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University and the mother of two sons. We see each other when we can, and our talk is apt to return to those days during the Depression which these many years later still seem filled with wonder.
