  • The Great Dane

A former boyfriend of Esther's hears of Zeb's demise and comes sniffing round his old gal, much to the bemusement of the others. The flirting lasts for a good few dates and a decent showering of gifts, but it never gets truly serious, and by the end of the hour, rather predictably, it's all over. It's easy to be cynical about a story like this, of course, but I think it's rather sweet. Why shouldn't Esther have a life?

Elizabeth doesn't agree. She thinks it's wrong that her grandma is going on dates at her age. While this is completely normal thinking for a teenager, it does mark a break with the show's past, where the three generations gelled so well.

In other news, Corabeth becomes a hatmaker and Jim Bob tries to get his car to run on Yancy's home brew. As distractions from the main plot, these are mildly interesting, but there's none of the fun the old subplots used to have. I do miss Richard and Will; it really isn't the same without them.

And where the heck did Jim Bob find his Swedish supermodel girlfriend? For a bloke who has as much charisma around women as a tin of paint, they do pair him with some lovely lasses. Fair play to you, lad!

Pick of the bunch: Esther Walton (Ellen Corby)

    Alternate title: The Gift
