Jason ponders his future in the army, while Jim Bob attempts to volunteer for the air corps. This is a good, thought-provoking hour which looks both at the case for joining the forces and the case against.

I thoroughly admired Jason's stance. In most TV dramas, all men sign up for battle at the first sniff of war, so it's refreshing to see somebody give it some proper thought for once. Jason wants to serve his kin and country, but not at the expense of killing a fellow man. Should he go with his head and bow to his peers or should he follow his heart and become an objector? It's another classic John-boy dilemma, though it suits Jason's character down to the ground.

Ben and Jim Bob have no such qualms. Both are itching to enlist, but Ben is needed at the mill and Jim Bob is allegedly too young (though that depends which date of birth you believe: 'The Runaway' or 'The Secret'). I found Ben's attitude rather annoying. It's none of his business whether Jason joins the army or not, yet Ben seems to take it as a personal slight.

Unable to sign up, Jim Bob gets an air-themed tattoo instead. He then spends the rest of the episode trying to remove it, which provides plenty of laughs. Strapping a slab of liver to it has to be the best.

Apparently Jason is almost ready to graduate. About bloody time! He's only been there six and a half years.

Pick of the bunch: Jason Walton (Jon Walmsley)

    Alternate title: The Choice

    Score: 8.9
