Wholesome though it undoubtedly is, life on Walton's Mountain can get a tad dull from time to time. In this episode, John becomes the latest member of the family to yearn for something more than the same old routine. He moves to Norfolk, finds a shipyard and (as so often on this show) gets the first job he applies for.

The story takes a while to get going, and it's only once John arrives in Norfolk that anything happens. The focus is not on the job itself, but on John's relationship with his new housemates at the boarding house. There's the landlady, Mrs Champion, who takes an immediate shine to John, then there's the crazy Greek guy, Stavros, who takes the opposite view and ends up clattering John in the pub.

The fight scene is brilliant! It's about time they had a proper punch-up on this show. Neither John or John-boy are hurt, and they both run away laughing. We never find out what happens to Stavros, nor to anybody else involved in the brawl. Did the police get called to pub fights in those days or were they just left to run their course?

This week's subplot goes to Zeb, who has toothache but refuses to admit it. Esther does eventually drag him to the dentist, where he has a little too much laughing gas. Funny thing is, Zeb is so full of smiles and laughs anyway that it's hard to tell the difference. Can we have Esther on laughing gas next time please? That really would be something to see.

Pick of the bunch: Mrs Champion (Joanna Moore)

    Alternate title: John's Crossroad

    Score: 9.1
