  • The Germans (Part II)

Another gripping story in what is shaping up to be an excellent season. Until now, the show has focused mostly on homegrown issues, with just the odd reference to the wider world. From now on, the looming threat of World War Two begins to make a mark. While this won't be to everybody's taste, the shift from the depression to the war probably mirrors the mood at the time.

The Blue Ridge Chronicle is proving to be an excellent source of stories. This week, John-boy decides to publish pages from 'Mein Kampf'. He believes his community needs to know what is going on in Europe, but almost everyone else disagrees. Once again, his bloodymindedness almost leads to disaster, with cancelled sales and bricks through the window. While John-boy believes everyone should judge the book for themselves, his neighbours think he is helping the spread of evil. You can see the debate from both sides.

On the lighter side, we have a subplot in which Erin enters a beauty contest. As with her earlier effort in 'The Matchmakers', she doesn't win, but the costumes are fun and the action does provide a few laughs.

The ending to the main plot is particularly fine. When Matt Fordwick organises a public burning of Mein Kampf, one of his parishioners starts throwing all manner of German books on the fire. John-boy picks one out and Flossie volunteers to read it. It turns out to be the Bible, and the mob is suitably humbled. It's a moving and beautiful scene.
