  • The Soft-focus Lens

This is a strange episode. Several stories, lots of guest actors, a variety of scenes and very little to draw them all together.

These are the threads. Olivia's former boyfriend, Oscar Cockrell, comes to stay. Oscar campaigns for election to Jefferson County Council. Esther enters her quilt in a competition and has a spat with another old lady. Olivia flavours a cake with Zeb's whisky and enters it in a competition. Zeb wonders who has been drinking from his secret whisky flask. Ben is given a piglet and supplies it for use in a greasy pig contest. The Baldwins make jam from their recipe and win a prize.

The script is notably off-key this week, and some of the acting is pretty weak. I guess without a strong storyline it can be hard to bring out the best in people. The soft-focus lens certainly earns its keep in Olivia's scenes, and that shot of Oscar and John-boy driving along is less than convincing.

If I had to pick a main plot I would choose the Olivia and Oscar thread. That said, the various competitions get more airtime between them. The best scene by far comes when half the village is chasing Ben's piglet around the fairground. Good value, although you'd never be allowed to film a scene like that today.
