Times are getting tough on Walton's Mountain. When the man from the electricity board comes round to turn off the power, Zeb takes it upon himself to get the lights back on. Unfortunately, his big surprise turns sour, and what begins as a good deed ends up as festival of jealousy and pride. It's a well-constructed story, and the cast play along very nicely. This won't be the last time Zeb packs his suitcase and leaves, but at this early stage it's a bit of a shock. Top marks to Will and Ellen for a very believable falling-out.

I always chuckle when Zeb gets involved with the Baldwin sisters. The way they interact is superb, and the sisters' innocence gives Zeb a chance to forget his woes and be a boy again. I don't know how true it is, but I'd love to think this is what Will Geer was like in real life.

Ellen Corby wrote the story for this episode, so it's no coincidence that her dancing partner is named Fred Hansen: Hansen was her maiden name. On this evidence, she should definitely get writing more often.

There's a noticeable pattern to the scoring on this website. Episodes which focus on the family's own issues tend to score highly, while those which focus on an outsider tend to fare less well. This one is firmly in the former camp. In fairness, it deserves to be.moreless

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Openation Narration: Whenever I think back on Walton's Mountain and about my family I remember mostly the feeling of love and the happiness we all shared. But though the mountain never changed, there were times, rare times, when those we thought the closest found themselves at odds. It happens in all families I suppose, and it happened one day in ours.

    • Closing Narration: We are all dancers. In each of us there is a need to move to the beat of music, to circle, to tempt, to embrace, and finally to move together in pairs. And when all else of 1934 is forgotten I will still treasure this house, this year, and this night.
