  • A Love Triangle on Walton's Mountain

Things go very pear-shaped when John-boy's latest girlfriend runs off with a rich kid in a flash car. Worse still, the rich kid lives in a town, so not only is he rich but he's sinful as well.

Joking aside, this is the first of many episodes in which our hero gets treated badly by a girl but accepts it as part of the course. He's a bit of a saint if the truth be told. The same cannot be said for rich kid, Ted, who is spoilt, mouthy, self-centred and rude. I wasn't sure where his character was going for much of the hour, but his final showdown with John-boy made for a decent climax.

Two scenes stand out for me this week. Firstly, Sarah's mother showing up in a horse and cart and hauling her daughter away for punishment. Secondly, Olivia giving Sarah's mother and Ted's father a good dressing down at the house. Both very enjoyable.

As for Jim Bob's duckling: wtf!?! We're supposed to believe he has been wandering around for WEEKS with an unhatched egg under his arm? Does the little chap not sleep, or go to school, or do anything that involves moving his arm ever? He's so fixated with the duckling, he shows no interest in Ted's swanky car. This may not have raised many eyebrows at the time, but looking back, it's badly out of character.

The reference to John Dillinger escaping from prison again means this episode takes place shortly after 3rd March 1934. He only escaped twice and the second time was on this date.

Pick of the bunch: Mrs Simmons (Allyn McLerie)

    Alternate title: The Hot Rod
