  • Working-class Nigel Barton wins a scholarship to Oxford and finds his life changing drastically - perhaps not for the better.

The first of Dennis Potter's two plays (his very earliest ones for television) about Nigel Barton, a character who bears some resemblance to Potter himself. Working-class Nigel has a hard time at first in university, and a harder time at home with the parents from whom he finds himself inexorably becoming estranged - for all that he's desperate for this not to happen. The education that he's won for himself must make him face up to his own identity and also to recognise that ambitions cannot be realised without some personal cost. Keith Barron's performance as Nigel is very memorable, and the play scores many points in its depiction of the British "system" - from which no-one ever quite escapes.moreless
