Constituency of One

Aired Wednesday 9:00 PM Oct 29, 2003 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Amy tells Josh a joke about a man who hasn't eaten in 38 days because he was waiting for his mother to call. This joke is also used in Studio 60, another Sorkin show, where Harriet Hayes has trouble remembering the right way to tell the joke.

    • Josh finds a dead fish wrapped in newspaper in his office. There is a rumour that Rahm Emanuel, Member of Congress for Illinois, sent a dead fish to a colleague with whom he was on bad terms.

  • Quotes

    • Ryan: So, uh, I got Josh an expensive birthday present.
C.J.: You can't--you're his subordinate. That's a violation of ethics rule.
Ryan: Then I'm giving it to you.
C.J.: You'd better believe you're my subordinate, and I dont think you even brought a present at all.
Ryan: There's a party at the Australian Embassy later.
      C.J (shocked): Are you...?
      Ryan: No. It's just, uh...
C.J.: There aren't enough phone books in the District of Columbia for you to stand on.
      Ryan: How about suburban Maryland?

    • Toby: Who's Ben?
C.J.: A guy I lived with for six months.
Toby: I didn't know you lived with a guy named Ben.
C.J. (smiling): There's a lot you don't know about me.
      Toby: Like what?
C.J.: Well, that's about it, really.

    • Amy (to Josh): 101st senator--is that like being the fifth Beatle?

  • Notes

    • The joke about a Jewish mother Sorkin wrote for Amy to tell Josh in this episode he also had Matt Albie give Harriet Hayes for her Falstaff Society induction in Episode 10 ("B-12") of the television show Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

    • Amy Gardner apparently resigns as Mrs. Bartlett's Chief of Staff in this episode.

  • Allusions

    • Amy: Am I going to come back from Mass and find a horse's head on my desk?

Amy is alluding to the movie The Godfather. In the film, Hollywood producer Jack Woltz has refused to cast Johnny Fontane in his new film, still bitter that Johnny had stolen a girl from him. Mob boss Don Coleone sends the family consigliere to suggest he reconsider, but Woltz stubbornly refuses. The next morning, Woltz wakes to find the head of his prized racehorse on the pillow next to him. Amy is suggesting that Josh (as the consigliere) has been sent by Leo (the mafia boss) to persuade her not to alter the budget process.
