Episode Summary

EDIT
C.J. has an intensely personal reason for leading the charge when Hoynes decides to rehab his image in a bid for the presidency by slandering Jed and Leo in a tell-all biography, and uses both her charm to get the information she needs to mount a counterattack, and her ferocity to deliver the smackdown that will stop Hoynes in his tracks; the D.C. Mayor finds an ally in Charlie as he tries to persuade Jed to sign a supplemental appropriation bill for the District which contains a controversial school voucher pilot program rider; Toby sits down with union reps over textile import safeguards and the trade deficit with China, and arrives at a plan to settle the bras versus cars debate with the help of Ed and Larry; Ryan astonishes Josh with a little Congressional sleight of hand to break a stalemate in the staff's meeting with the Base Closing Commission; in a difficult moment, C.J. reaches out to an old friend by finally returning Ben's call.moreless

It took a while for season five to get its legs, but this episode is worth watching. There are the political games that Josh and Toby have to play to make some difficult decisions. Short scenes that say a lot. The president and Leo experience the problem of having to remember earlier statements that, twisted the wrong way around, could make loyalty seem like conspiracy. Perception in politics! President Bartlet also discovers that some of his widely held beliefs might be wrong, and it takes Charlie to point that out.

But the episode belongs to C.J.Cregg. Lawrence O'Donnell Jr., no stranger to television talk shows, paints a very bitter picture of the power and corruption of talking heads on television. After her victory over Taylor Reid in the previous episode, C.J. gets hit badly by the creepy talk show host. Her slow recovery and the astonishing meeting with Hoynes surprise and move the viewer. Miss Janney's performance alone would make me recommend this episode.moreless
  • Good one

    8.7
That was really brilliant episode. I mean, to have Hoynes back with this quite terrible way of getting what he wants and the way CJ starts to take it personally and in the end.. it comes clear that there was really a reason for that.. I mean, the way CJ acted in this episode.. those different phases: from broken and mad to that really strong fighting.. That was great to see.

I also loved the storyline with DC major. I mean, to have Charley there.. and hear what he thinks and CJ comments when she comes back and hears what has happened.

    So.. I mean, a really strong episode.moreless
