The West Wing

NBC (ended 2006)

  • Season 4 Episode 2: 20 Hours in America (2)

  • C.J.: Today at 5:32 PM Central Saving Time, two pipe bombs were set off inside the Geiger Indoor Arena, which is the swimming team's facility at Kennison State University. The Kennison Hawkeyes. The women's team was hosting a match. A meet with Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota. They're all Big Ten schools.
Kennison State University is fictional. It is possible that it is meant to stand in for the University of Iowa, which is a Big Ten school and is also known as the Hawkeyes. Kennison State University is said to be in Cedar Rapids, while the Univeristy of Iowa is located in Iowa City, IA, placing it in the Central time zone. Cedar Rapids, IA and Iowa City are about thirty miles from one another.

  • Fitzwallace: Qumar saying it was someone else.

Qumar is not a real country.

  • Season 4 Episode 1: 20 Hours in America (1)

  • Leo: Qumar's reopened the investigation.

Qumar is not a real country.

  • Unionville, Indiana, where Jed is giving his speech, is close to Bloomington, Indiana, an urban area where Josh, Toby, and Donna wouldn't have been stranded for long. There is also no passenger train station in Bedford, Indiana.

  • When one of the reporters tells C.J. about the Abbey incident, he claims the story came from The Milwaukee Sentinel. Milwaukee's newspaper has been named The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel since the two papers merged in the early 1990s.

  • Season 3 Episode 21: Posse Comitatus

  • Earlier in the season, there was an episode titled "The Women of Qumar" which was also about the same fictional country.

  • Bartlet: I'm gonna be running for re-election while I'm fighting a war against Qumar.

Qumar is a fictional country made up by Sorkin.

  • Fitz says that Shareef's plane is a Gulfstream, but the plane we see looks like a Lear jet.

  • Secret Service agents on "body" assignment are required to wear kevlar vests. The bullets struck Donovan in his upper left chest, an area that would be protected by the vest unless a large caliber gun or Teflon ammunition was used in the shooting.

  • Season 3 Episode 20: We Killed Yamamoto

  • Leo: They used a pencil.

In this episode Leo says that the Russian solution for writing in zero gravity is the use of a pencil. This is an urban myth, It would actually be dangerous, if the tip were to break off and float around freely.

  • David: We have no extradition treaty with Qumar.

Qumar is not a real country.

  • Fitzwallace uses the example of the Battle of Agincourt to discuss how well enemies were treated if they surrendered. However, Agincourt is an example of the opposite. After the first and second attacks by the French, they had too many prisoners. Fearing the prisoners would overtake them, Henry
ordered them slaughtered. The code of chivalry does not permit such action, so Henry had his archers aim at the knights and forced them to kill the prisoners.

  • When Donna is at the meeting in Bismarck, North Dakota, there is a banner hanging in the background that says "Democratic Party of North Dakota". North Dakota does not have a Democratic Party. Years ago, the Nonpartisan League merged with the Democratic Party to form the Democratic-Nonpartisan League (Dem-NPL for short), which serves as North Dakota's version of the Democratic Party. The state party is quite adamant about publicizing itself with the full name at all times, and would do so on such a banner.

  • The current duty weapon for the Secret Service is the Sig Sauer P229 9mm semiautomatic pistol, which is the only weapon agents are allowed to carry. If an undercover assignment required the use of a revolver, it would be a short barrelled model, and never a .357 Magnum revolver, since a long barrel prevents quick drawing from a holster.

  • Season 3 Episode 19: The Black Vera Wang

  • CJ's stalker uses an AOL ID, "bill182."

  • Leo and Fitzwallace make two fairly large errors when discussing the possibility that Dover Air Base, Fort Meyer and the White House are possible terror targets.

First, on the map, all three locations have the same longitude and latitude coordinates, which would put them all on top of each other. As Leo is a former pilot and Fitzwallace is a Navy man, both should have realized instantly that these long/lat coordinates were wrong.

Following are the correct long/lat indicators:

    39'07Œ42 N,75'27Œ53 W Dover Air Force Base

    38'52Œ49 N,77'4Œ47 W Fort Meyer

    38'53Œ51.61 N,77'2Œ11.58 W The White House

Second, the long/lat indicators on the maps, 29'30Œ N, 45'45Œ E, are coordinates at a location roughly 130 miles east of Kuwait, and obviously not on the North American continent like the three locations should be. Coincidentally, if the latitude coordinate was changed to west instead of east, it would put all three "targets" in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Bartlet: Isn't Shareef supposed to be helping us with intelligence
    out of Qumar?

Qumar is not a real country.

  • Fitz:The NSA's been monitoring web sites of the Bahji cell operating out of Syria. They've been looking for pictures codes and they intercepted cellular calls.

The Bahji terrorist cell is made-up.

  • Leo incorrectly states that Fort Myer is in Maryland, when it's actually in Virginia.

  • Barneys doesn't have a store in the Washington, D.C. area. The closest one to the nation's capital is the flagship store in Manhattan.
