Episode Summary

Goldstein's grandfather is hospitalized and his grandmother stays at the hospital with him, so Coach Reeves asks the team to check in on him at home every so often. The other guys aren't too keen on this because Goldstein really doesn't fit in with them, but they agree to check on him and, in the process, take advantage of him and his hospitality. Goldstein threatens to quit the team, and Coach Reeves gives him a lecture on standing up for himself.moreless

Abner Goldstein, for most of his life, has been sheltered under the care of his grandparents, who took him in after his parents died in a car crash when he was 11. He's been led to believe that everybody is trustworthy. He runs into problems when trying to interact with his teammates, who mostly have been raised to "look out for #1." Under prodding from the coach, they pretend to care, but are really using Goldstein. After things are OK, they go back to kicking him to the curb. He learns to get a spine and fight for what's his.moreless

This episode is obvioulsy centered on Goldstein. In this episode we learn about how his parents died in a car crash when he was 11. He came to live with grandparents. This episode has some excellent insight into his past and how he became the person he is. Like most teenagers, Goldstein goes out of his way to fit in with his "freinds", even when they are obviously using him. He allows the team to use his grandparents house to have a party while they are in the hospital. Reeves teaches the rest of the team what friendship is about and they return to Goldstein's house to make amends. Kinda of corny but rich in developing character background. Rating B+moreless

    • Goldstein: You guys say Goldstein's not as cool as you are, that he hasn't any style. His style's a joke, a bring-down, a put-down, an embarrassment. Well, you know what Goldstein says to that? TOUGH! That's too damn bad! I tried to be like you guys, to be one of you, but you wouldn't let me. You just shoved it back down my throat EVERY DAY this past season! Last seat on the bus? Goldstein's not getting it. A party? A get-together? Let Goldstein hear about it for himself. Even the cafeteria. You guys make room for yourselves. Me? I gotta sit on a window sill, or maybe a chair with a tack on it. Well, no more. I'm tired of it! I'M SICK OF IT, MAN! UP TO HERE! From now on, from now on, I'm fighting for what's mine, what's RIGHTFULLY mine! And that means not having to come into this place with a knot in my stomach! I'm not quitting this team, either. This team means too much to me. But, I'm not changing myself one inch of what I am...for ANYBODY! Edit
