Great episode and how much fun is it to see Artemus go practically all on his own through-out the entire adventure? Ross Martin is paired with lovely actress Mala Powers (and they've worked together before) and the two have a marvellous chemistry. The color and excitement of New Orleans during mardi gras along with human bombs exploding makes for a very exciting episode. Ida Lupino, mostly a director by this time in her sterling career, makes for a terrific villianess and her ending was left open, making one believe West and Gordon might encounter Dr. Faustina again but, alas, we do not. And that is truly a shame!
No wonder this is Ross Martin's favorite episode. With Artie front and center, he reminds us that he can carry a series and be a leading man of romance and action. He has the right amount of panache, derring-do, and humor, and it makes you wish he had more "solo" episodes as the series went on. The episode itself is classic "West:" megalomaniac, crazy plan, comic relief, a beautiful girl and some brawls. Ida Lupino makes for an ideal villainess, and her plan to turn corpses into human time bombs is perfect for the show.
Artie gets the girl (almost), saves the day and socks the bad guys. Of course, Jim turns up to help, but this is Gordon all the way, and as such it's one of the best episodes of Season 2.
