  • The ingredients don't quite come together.

Though it doesn't hit the heights of others, this episode does contain all of the key ingredients of a "Wild Wild West" episode. You've got your megalomaniacal villain, an extravagant scheme (this time out it's to keep Hawaii from joining the U.S. by killing the Hawaiian king), a beautiful girl, a death trap to escape from (a swinging battle axe that threatens to bisect Jim) and some steampunk (the early missiles used for the plot).

But even with all of the ingredients in place, "TNOT Deadly Blossom" never really takes off. Maybe it's because villain-of-the-week Barclay is never really convincing as a menace (he spends most of the show entertaining West in his drawing room), or the fact that Jim and Artie spend so much of the story apart, but somehow it feels like the story never gets going. The climax feels rushed, the set for Barclay's mountaintop missile silo is underwhelming and, with the exception of the "Pit and the Pendulum" deathtrap, it's an episode very light on action.

"TNOT Deadly Blossom" was clearly made with the "Wild Wild West" blueprint, but not with materials as good as we'd seen in other episodes.moreless
