The Night of the Surreal McCoy
AIRED:

Agents West and Gordon are in attendance at a museum when someone steals the Herzburg Crown Jewels from a locked room. When the rancher-owner of a famous Western painting removes it from the same gallery, Gordon becomes suspicious. The agents discover that the rancher is partners with Miguelito Loveless, the evil inventor-doctor. His latest invention is a machine that moves real people in and out of paintings. Miguelito's plan is to transpose murderers into famous paintings, distribute the paintings to the rulers of the world, and have them all killed!

  • The best Dr. Loveless episode of Season 2

    10
Michael Dunn, the best villain of "The Wild Wild West," is back as Dr. Migelito Loveless in the character's best performance since Season 1. Though Dunn is always a joy to watch in the role, his previous appearances in Season 2 (TNOT Raven, TNOT Green Terror) were decidedly weaker efforts. But here, Loveless is back in fullblown mad scientist mode with a machine that can transport people in and out of paintings. He's got a special plan for Jim, however - a date with the fastest gunman in the west.

The chemistry between Robert Conrad and Michael Dunn is one of the things that make Dr. Loveless's appearances such highlights of the series. And they are in fine form this time around, particularly in a scene when the two enemies need to team up against a mutual adversary. The set design, as usual, is terrific as well; I really dug the lights and whirring parts of Loveless's machine that sends people into the paintings.

Not surprisingly, Jim and Artie save the day, but true to form, the episode ends with the promise of Loveless's not-too-far-off return for another battle.moreless

    • Ambassador: What I can't understand is why would a man as rich as Mr. Morgan want to steal. He doesn't need the money.
Jim: No rich man does. They go on making it, one unneeded million after another.

    • Jim: I thought you were dead.
Dr. Loveless: Oh, no, Mr. West! I am afraid I shall never die. Death is too ordinary. The humiliation would kill me.

    • Dr. Loveless: Mr. Morgan, I will not be bullied. I realize that a lifetime's association with cows does not prepare one in the ways of a gentleman.

    • Jim: How'd you get rid of Lightnin'?
Artie: He couldn't hold my liquor.

    • (In the midst of a shootout)
Jim: You know where the Ambassador is?
Artie: Yeah. Saloon basement, he's all right.
Jim: You think you can find him?
Arte: What, and leave you here alone?
Jim: Only four of them left.
(Artie shoots one of the gunmen)
Artie: Three. Hardly seems worth your while.
