Omar continues his bold strikes on Barksdale stash houses, now heavily guarded. Under orders from Stringer Bell, Bodie faces Marlo, a fierce young dealer with lucrative corners near the now-toppled Franklin Terrace towers. McNulty launches his own reinvestigation of last year's prison suicide of D'Angelo Barksdale. Greggs' relationship with Cheryl and the new baby is shakey. Burrell is feeling heat from Councilman Carcetti and reaches an uneasy peace with the legislator. The street violence also presents Daniels with the difficult decision of whether to help end a drug war in the Eastern district, at the cost of giving up a months-long wiretap. Cheese loses more than a little on his bet at a bloody dogfight and later is hauled downtown for questioning as a murder suspect by Bunk and McNulty. A beleaguered Cutty seeks employment outside the drug world. Carver, Herc and the Western drug unit take to the street undercover, but a hand-to-hand drug-buy goes sour, prompting Major "Bunny" Colvin, the district commander, to question his thirty years on the force and the legacy of his career.moreless
The Wire continues its magnificent rebound from the misguided departure of Season 2's dockworker storyline with this gripping episode. All of the show's best elements are showcased in this one, setting up tremendous anticipation for a dynamite season.moreless
The detail suffers a setback. McNulty is doggedly pursuing an intuitive hunch, as usual. Stringer's slingers from the Terrace branch out into new territories, meeting little resistance- with one notable exception. The top brass hammer mercilessly away at the commanding officers for results, and the misery rolls downhill, especially after Cheese ignites a beef and bodies start turning up. Burrell makes an alliance with an ambitious and unscrupulous Councilman. Daniels and Pearlman end up sleeping together. Omar escalates his capers against Bell's stashes. Kima tires of her new parent role and makes a decision that is sure to impact her relationship. Beautiful pacing and acting in this episode, but it's The Wire- who would expect anything less?moreless
Bunny Colvin: You know what I was thinking? That tonight's a good night. Why? Because my shot cop didn't die. And it hit me. This is what makes a good night on my watch. Absence of a negative. Here's the thing. Six months from now, I'm gone. I put in my thirty, and the only thing going to be left of me on that job is an 8-by-11 framed picture in the Western hallway. But you know what? The shit is out there. The city is worse than when I first came on. So what does that say about me? About my life?

Carver: Both Olsen twins. Ashley. Kate...
Herc: Mary Kate. And, yeah, I admire their body of work.
Carver: They're yours. All you gotta do is name a guy.
Herc: (thinking) I'm not catchin', I'm picthin'.
Carver: No problem.

Valcheck: So, what's my role in your little drama?
Carcetti: I thought you might broker a meeting, you know... help your fearless leader see the light about his new friend on the council.
Valcheck: And I should tell him, what? Make nice or invest heavily in petroleum jelly?
Carcetti: Hey, his ass, his choice.
