is the Wire filmed in HD 16:9? why 4:3 DVDs?

    I've been dismayed to have to watch all the Wire episodes in 4:3. All the DVDs are in 4:3. Why wasn't the Wire filmed in 16:9 HD?

    The Wire was never filmed in full HD or widescreen. When the series started, HD film and widescreen filming wasn't available, and when it became available David Simon said he didn't want to change the filming because that would change the look of the series.

    Actually, it was shot on film. It was framed as 16:9 for futire-proofing. It never actually aired as a 16:9 show. Find more here:

    Either stretched so everyone's a fathead or cropped at the top and bottom so you're seeing even less of the picture... hardly "the same thing".
