  • A beautiful example of this fine, heart-touching show.

This was a wonderful episode and the first I had seen in some time. Truth be told, I think anyone would be upset if their best friend scheduled his or her big party--one which their friend was not able to have due to religion--on their birthday, especially when the two friends have always celebrated their birthdays together.

Kevin shows quite a display of character by sucking up his disappointment and showing up at Paul's bar mitzvah anyway. The kids end up having a wonderful time and Kevin is glad he went--and I was delighted to hear Simon and Garfunkel's "Bookends", one of the most beautiful pieces of music written played during the photo montage at the end.moreless

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Kevin Arnold's birthday is March 18th.

    • In this episode Paul's middle name is mentioned: Joshua.

    • In this episode Paul's bar mitzvah is set, according to tradition, for the first Saturday after his 13th birthday; set for March 18. This conflicts with Kevin's 13th birthday "party" that actually falls on that Saturday. Funny, March 18, 1969 was a Tuesday. March 18th does not even fall on a Saturday in 1968 or 1970.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Narrator: And so it turned out to be a great birthday after all. I slow danced with Paul's Aunt Selma. I ate more than Mrs. Pfeiffer could have dreamed possible. And in a funny way... when I look back on it... I sorta feel like it was my bar mitzvah, too.

    • Narrator: When Paul and I were little kids... we had our birthdays only four days apart. Come to think of it, we still have our birthdays only four days apart. But I guess birthdays aren't as big a part of life as they used to be. Man - we has some classic parties. Year after year we reached for manhood together. When we fell short... we fell short together. God - we couldn't wait to get older.
