Both Play.com and Amazon.co.uk are listing The Wonder Years on dvd in March this year - there doesn't seem to be details of how many episodes but its showing as 39.99 (discounted to 29.99) so i assume its at least the first 2 seasons.

    Yay!

Keep us informed on the progress of this release. I've heard rumors of a pending release this year but there isnt any information about it and no retailer has any information except for the possibility of a scheduled release this spring. I contacted Anchor Bay Entertainment and asked them about the rumors of the release and why it wasnt on any more. After several days of waiting I finally got a response today. I was told that due to the licensing rights of all owners The Wonder Years will never be released on DVD. Not sure if Europe can legally produce this show but if it does somehow I'm definately going to get in on it. I'm glad I recorded the shows from the tv when it originally aired!

Anchor Bay wouldn't own the rights, Fox do.

Any the only reason it isn't on DVD is music licensing, in the UK the laws are different so its in the favor of the DVD company not the (music) catalog owners.

Fox bought out New World Entertainment, ABC had no hand in the production of the show anyway.

They do not. Its a FOX show - they own it. Anchor Bay does not own it, http://tvshowsondvd.com/showinfo.cfm?showID=4714
    A news post, http://tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=2952

Why would AB own it and now release it anyway?

And that set is illegal and most likely crappy.

First of all I have spoken with reps from Anchor Bay
as recently as January of this year.
According to them they DO own it and do not plan to release it ever! Why would such a big Company lie?

Second of all the quality on that set is PERFECT.
Read the feedback on it, then go to ebay under that same sellers name and see the dozens of feedback comments on it.

    The quality is AMAZING..

    It's a shame you'll never know.

Believe me FOX do own it.

Check the internet for FOX' purchase of 'New World Entertainment' - they own the DVD rights.

Contact Anchor Bay again, and then contact FOX - they are the ones owning it, I can't see Fox licensing it to Anchor Bay to release since FOX handle their own DVD releases.

    :

The Berne Convention states that all works except photographic and cinematographic shall be protected for at least 50 years after the author's death, but parties are free to provide longer terms of protection, as the European Union did with the 1993 Directive on harmonising the term of copyright protection. For photography the Berne Convention sets a minimum of 25 years protection from the year the photograph was created, and for cinematography the minimum is 50 years after first showing, or 50 years after creation if it hasn't been shown within 50 years after the creation. Countries under the older revisions of the treaty may choose to provide, and certain types of works (such as phonorecords and motion pictures) may be provided shorter terms.

I don't think that covers 1988 Wonder Years.

I emailed Anchor Bay and they said they do not own it,

    :

    Hello,

I heard a rumor online that Anchor Bay own the rights to The Wonder Years? I was under the impression 20th Century Fox own the rights and are planning a release. Do AB own the rights?

    Thank you for your time.

You're right, Anchor Bay NO LONGER owns the distribution rights for "The Wonder Years", but they did at one time, hence the VHS releases of the first four episodes of the series. CBS/FOX does own the rights at the current time, and according to a news item a little over a year ago now in February 2005 (it appeared in "Entertainment Weekly" and was reiterated on tvshowsondvd.com), FOX was working on getting TWY on DVD and said it was an ongoing process, and obviously nothing has materialized to date. But we still must not give up, it may still be a couple of years down the road, but I figure sooner or later we'll see something out for this show (2008 marks the series' 20th Anniversary, maybe they're holding out until then?!).

Also, and it has been ages since I read this, I seem to remember them saying that they would not release any season sets until they got the rights for the music in all of the episodes, so this will take a very, very long time (even if the rights holders cooperate!), because of the 200+ songs used throughout the show's run.

Anchor Bay did not release the DVD (Best Of) just the Videos, Delta did - Fox most likely licensed the content to them. FOX do own the rights.

AB did not have the DVD rights at any point, hence them not releasing the show on DVD.

I really want this show to come to DVD like many others. Its a shame that its taking this long but I understand that they have to get the rights for all of the awesome songs they played in every single episode. I just hope it comes out sometime this year!!

I'm glad FOX is working to release TWY. It means they want to release it. I miss this show completely and wish it was on TV. They better hurry up and get it out. When they do, I hope they don't cut any of the music. The music is VERY important to this series.
