The movie tracks the original very closely -- evidently the update was primarily to provide a platform for persons more recognizable to todays young adults (Broderick vs Preston, Chenoweth vs Jones, Baker vs Hackett) than the original; unfortunately, in my opinion, Mr. Broderick doesn't have the maturity (age? seasoning?) to carry off the role. As a result, the timing of routines/scenes and songs/dances is not what I was hoping for.
I must complement Ms. Chenoweth -- her voice is every bit the voice of Ms. Jones (superb) and the songs she sings are wonderful. It is not clear who replaces the Buffalo Bills (I can't tell from the credits), but their voices are excellent and are a match for the Buffalo Bills -- again, their songs are wonderful.
However, the point of the movie is Professor Harold Hill, and without the needed lead, the movie is difficult to get through.
For anyone wishing to see the Music Man, I must recommend the 1962 original -- I suspect that those who only see this version will be somewhat disappointed in the movie.moreless
